Yellowjackets edge Herons 5-4 despite strong doubles play

GENEVA, N.Y.— The William Smith College tennis team was edged by the University of Rochester, 5-4, this afternoon in a non-conference matchup at the HWS Tennis Center. The Herons fall to 6-7 overall, while the Yellowjackets move to 5-8.
 
William Smith started out with the lead in doubles action, earning two out of the three doubles points. Senior Audrey Camacho and sophomore Natalie Haythorn defeated Sanjana Karnam and Neha Dania, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot, while first-year Marin Montagne and sophomore Julia Pida bested Jaclyn Dron and Jasmin Toor at No. 3, 8-5. Camacho and Haythorn as well as Montagne and Pida delivered victories for the Herons in their first matches as partners.
 
In singles action the Yellowjackets took over the lead, winning four out of the six singles matches. Camacho earned her second victory of the day, beating Toor in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. 
 
In the No. 6 spot, Montagne also grabbed her second win of the day, defeating Dron, 6-0, 7-5.  She is now on a two match win streak in singles action and is 3-3 on the season in singles play.

William Smith will be back in action after a weekend of no matches on Wednesday, April 12, when it travels to Ithaca, New York, to take on the Bombers. Ithaca is 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League. First serve between the Herons and the Bombers is set for 4 p.m.
