Fast start propels Hobart to victory at Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y.—The Hobart College football team jumped out to a 24-0 lead and cruised to a 31-9 season-opening victory at Alfred University tonight. The Statesmen offense piled up 331 yards, including 217 yards on the ground, as Hobart won for the fourth straight season on opening day.
 
Senior running back Rayshawn Boswell averaged 6.4 yards per carry, finishing the game with 96 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Classmate Tim Denham Jr. added 76 yards rushing and a touchdown. Both backs caught two passes with Denham gaining 21 yards and Boswell 17.
 
Junior quarterback Johnny Colombi completed 13-of-26 passes for 114 yards. Junior wide receiver Rane Daramola posted team-highs with four catches for 37 yards.
 
On defense, linebackers Peterson Monexant and Anthony Romano led the Statesmen. Monexant posted a team-high 10 tackles, including 1.5 sacks. Romano added nine tackles.
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • After missing a 34-yard field goal on the game's opening drive, junior Tobias Wefering made a 36-yarder for Hobart's first points of the season.
 
SECOND QUARTER
  • Boswell capped a 13-play, 68-yard drive with a 3-yard run into the end zone for a 10-0 lead with 3:12 left in the half.
 
THIRD QUARTER
  • Hobart's defense got on the board midway through the third quarter. Monexant sacked the Saxon quarterback and knocked the ball out. Senior defensive back Abdoulaye Diallo scooped up the loose ball and raced 44 yards to the end zone for his first career touchdown.
  • The Statesmen defense also set up the next score. Senior defensive back Joe McCoy made a diving interception at the Alfred 16. Two plays later, Boswell scored on a 4-yard run for a 24-point lead.
  • Alfred broke up the shutout when Chris Kelly (19-48 passing for 202 yds, 2 INT) scored on a 10-yard run. The play was part of a 10-play, 81-yard march. The Saxons went for a two, but the pass attempt failed.
  • Alfred added a 32-yard field goal by Lucas Freeland to trim Hobart's lead to 24-9.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Hobart sealed the win with Denham's 4-yard touchdown run with 2:38 remaining.
