Statesmen tame Tomcats for 4th straight sweep

ELMIRA, N.Y.—The Hobart College volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Thiel College this afternoon in Speidel Gymnasium on the campus of Elmira College. With the win over the Tomcats, the Statesmen extend their win streak to five, with the last four matches all being sweeps. Hobart moves to 6-1 on the season while Thiel falls to 2-2 overall.

Graduate Student Andrew Kim led the Statesmen with 18 kills, hitting an impressive .667 % in the sweep. He added five digs, four service aces and one block for Hobart. First-year Daniel Sappia added 11 kills (.474), while classmate Grayson Getz chipped in seven (.778). Sappia and Getz combined for five digs, three service aces and two solo blocks.

The Statesmen combined for 41 kills, hitting .378 as a team. They held the Tomcats to just 16 kills and a .000 hitting percentage. Hobart led Thiel in aces (5-2), digs (26-23) and total blocks (8-2) for an overall dominant performance.

David Gonzalez led the Tomcats with six kills, hitting .214%. He added two solo blocks for Thiel.
  
MATCH MOMENTS:
  • Hobart came out swinging, putting down 20 kills (.472) compared to Thiel's seven (.263) in the opening set. Kim and Sappia put down seven kills each to lead the Statesmen to a convincing 25-20 win in set one.
  • The Statesmen continued on its momentum with one of its most dominating performances of the season in the second set. Getz grabbed control of the match with a strong run from the service line that saw three aces. Hobart kept Thiel to a -.091 hitting percentage to grab the second set in dominating fashion, 25-13.
  • The Tomcats struggled to find their rhythm in the third, putting down a match-low three kills. The Statesmen held them to a negative hitting percentage (-.143) for the second straight set. Kim exploded for eight kills in the final set to complete the sweep for Hobart with a 25-19 win in the third.
     
MATCH STATS:
  • Kim led Hobart with 15 kills (.556), while Sappia added 11 (.474). Getz chipped in seven, hitting a season-high .778%.
  • First-year setter Zack Farren recorded a match-leading 32 assists through three sets. He chipped in one dig in the win.
  • The Statesmen continued to show scrappy defense, recording 26 digs as a team compared to the Tomcats' 23. First-year libero Gavin Meador led the team with seven while Kim added five and Sappia chipped in four.

Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 27, as it takes on Drew University and Kean University at Elmira College. First serve between the Statesmen and the Rangers is set for 11 a.m. in Speidel Gymnasium followed by a matchup with the Cougars at 3 p.m.
