Hobart downs RPI 1-0

GENEVA, N.Y. –Hobart first-year forward Brady Leitner scored in the 75th minute as the Statesmen defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 1-0 in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With their second straight win, the Statesmen are now 3-5-4 overall this season with a 2-2-2 record in conference play.
 
Junior Thomas Chyzowych played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves. It was his fourth shutout of the season.
 
Noah Churchill started in goal for the Engineers (3-9-1, 1-3-1). He made one save.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hobart finished the contest with a 12-6 advantage in shots, including a 10-4 margin in the second half.
  • RPI had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • The first half was evenly played with both teams collecting two shots.
  • Thirty seconds into the game sophomore La Zai Outerbridge got a shot off from just outside of the 18-yard box that was blocked by an RPI defender.
  • In the 29th minute, Oliver Szorc had a shot turned aside by Chyzowych.
  • Late in the first half, senior Nick Kasper had Hobart's best chance in the opening 45 minutes. Hi header was stopped by Churchill.
  • First-year Will Slayton and sophomore Keegan Mulroony nearly broke the deadlock but were unable to slip a shot past the goalie.
  • Leitner opened the scoring in the 75th minute. After his initial shot was blocked, he picked up his own rebound and fired a shot past Churchill. His first collegiate goal was assisted by Walter Luglio.
  • RPI had chances to tie the game but was unable to score the equalizer. In the 89th minute, Julio Rodriguez had a shot that was ticketed for the lower left corner turned aside by a diving Chyzowych.

"Three big points in the Liberty League," Head Coach Shawn Griffin said. "I am proud of how hard the guys played. We have to be ready for a good Union side tomorrow."
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when it welcomes Union to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
