#25 William Smith clips Union 2-1

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—William Smith junior midfielder Ruth Hotaling scored twice as the 25th-ranked Herons defeated Union 2-1 in a Liberty League contest at College Park Field this afternoon. With the win, William Smith improves to 8-3-3 overall this season with a 4-1-2 mark in conference play.
 
Graduate Student Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal, making five saves.
 
Sam Friedman scored the goal for the Garnet Chargers (9-3-4, 2-2-2). Maya Koster played all 90 minutes in goal and made 10 saves.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • William Smith finished the game with a 17-7 advantage in shots, including a 12-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Herons had eight corner kicks and Union had three.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • First-year Lily Pryzwansky had the game's first scoring opportunity in the second minute. Her shot was turned aside by Koster.
  • In the seventh minute,  Nelson was tested but she turned aside a shot from Anne Pearl.
  • Senior Marjorie Plants was robbed by a diving Koster in the 25th minute.
  • Hotaling opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. She curled a corner kick into the goal. It was her second goal of the season.
  • Union tied the game in the 63rd minute. Sam Friedman slotted a shot past Nelson for her fourth goal of the season. Taylor Bovardi was awarded an assist on the tally.
  • Hotaling scored the game-winning goal in in the 75th minute. She converted on a penalty kick for her third goal of the season.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • With today's win, William Smith now leads the all-time series 28-9-2.
  • The Herons have won 20 straight against the Garnet Chargers.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith returns home next Saturday, Oct. 26, when it Welcomes Bard to Geneva, New York. The Liberty League contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Cozzens Field.
