HOUGHTON, N.Y.— Three different Herons scored as the William Smith field hockey team defeated Houghton 3-1 this evening in a nonconference game on Burke Field. With the win, the Herons move to 4-6 on the season, while the Highlanders fall to 5-5 overall.
First-years Mia Batchelder and Caroline Kogut, as well as sophomore Leah Griffith scored the three goals for William Smith in the win. Senior Katherine Jacobia tallied the lone assist of the game for the Herons. Kogut's goal was her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
William Smith enjoyed an 18-11 edge in shots, including a 14-6 advantage in shots on target. The Herons also recorded nine penalty corners to the Highlanders eight.
First-year Baker Jeremiah played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons and recorded four saves in the win. She is now 4-6 on the season.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- The Herons opened the scoring just over six minutes into the first quarter. Batchelder split two defenders at the top of the arc and took a low hard shot past the Highlanders goalie. It was her third goal of the season.
- William Smith nearly doubled their lead in the 12th minute after a long pass out of the back found a wide-open Abby Jones. Jones went one-on-one with the Houghton goalie who made a diving stop to deny her from her third goal of the season.
- The Herons got back on the board less than three minutes into the second quarter after being awarded a penalty corner. Senior Katherine Jacobia inserted the ball to Kogut who fired off a shot low past the Highlander goalie to give the Herons a two-goal cushion.
- Houghton responded with two minutes remaining in the third quarter to cut William Smith's lead to one. Bekah Davie scored the goal for the Highlanders, while Madison Gancasz was credited with the assist.
- William Smith added an insurance goal with less than one minute remaining in regulation. Griffith spun around her defender, firing a shot to the back post for her second goal of the season.

William Smith will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 5, when it travels to Ithaca to open Liberty League play. The rematch of last year's conference championship game between the Herons and the Bombers is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Higgins Stadium.
