TROY, N.Y.— The William Smith field hockey team cruised to a 4-2 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this afternoon to clinch a Liberty League playoff berth for the third-straight season. With the win, the Herons move to 8-9 overall with a 4-3 mark in conference play, while the Engineers fall to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the Liberty League.
First-year Caroline Kogut led William Smith with four points on two goals this afternoon. Senior Hannah Huston chipped in three points on a goal and assist, while junior Lily Gutch added two points on two assists. Junior Abby Jones opened the scoring for the Herons with her fourth goal of the season. Kogut, Huston and Jones all led William Smith with three shots each against the Engineers.
The Herons put on a dominant performance in the crucial conference matchup with the Engineers and held a 12-10 edge in shots over RPI, including an 8-7 advantage in shots on target. William Smith also held an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners leading to three of the four William Smith goals.
First-year Baker Jeremiah played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons and made five saves in the win. She is now 8-9 on the season.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- William Smith opened the scoring 3:29 into the first quarter after first-year Mia Batchelder beat her defender one-on-one on the endline and dished a pass across the goal. The ball found the stick of Jones who slotted a shot near post to give the Herons the early 1-0 lead.
- The Herons doubled their lead in the 22nd minute after being awarded a penalty corner. Huston inserted the ball to first-year Ana Dios Vidal who dished a pass to Gutch. Gutch found a wide-open Kogut who fired a shot past the Engineer goalie for her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
- William Smith would strike again less than two minutes later after being awarded another penalty corner. Huston inserted the ball to Gutch who slotted a pass right back to Huston. She fired a shot far post to give the Herons a 3-0 lead. Gutch was credited with her second assist of the day.
- The Herons continued their momentum into the second half and extended their lead to 4-0 after being awarded a penalty corner in the 35th minute. Huston inserted the ball to Kogut at the top of the arc who fired off a shot that beat Oliva Brovak for her second goal of the day.
- The Engineers got on the board in the 50th minute after Nina Caprio beat her defender on the endline and slotted a shot past Jeremiah to make the score 4-1. Grace Johnson was credited with the assist.
- RPI made it a two-goal game with four minutes remaining as Lauren McCarthy turned around her defender and ripped a shot to the back post. Caprio was credited with the assist.
- The Herons used the clock to their advantage and maintained possession of the ball for the remaining four minutes to close out the crucial conference matchup on top 4-2.

"We started the game with great urgency and focus," said Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07. "We executed our corners really well and finished attacking opportunities early in the game. I'm really proud of the group for coming out strong today and securing the fourth place spot in Liberty League play!"

William Smith will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 2, when it hosts SUNY Oswego for its regular season finale. The nonconference battle between the Herons and the Lakers is scheduled for noon on McCooey Field.
