#15 Golden Flyers clip Herons 2-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The William Smith ice hockey team was edged by 15th-ranked Nazareth 2-1 in a non-conference contest at the Tim Horton's Regional Iceplex this afternoon.
 
Senior Erin Murray started in goal. She made a season-high 33 saves in just over 58 minutes of work. Graduate student Mackenzie O'Neil scored the goal for the Herons.
 
Corsica Skibinski and Meredith Boettcher scored for Nazareth. Mckinley Hoff played all 60 minutes in goal and made nine saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • William Smith falls to 3-6-0 on the season. It was their third straight game against an opponent ranked in the USCHO.com poll.
  • The Golden Flyers improve to 5-2-0 on the season.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Nazareth finished the game with a 35-10 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Neither team scored on the power play. Both teams went 0-for-2 with the extra skater.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • O'Neil opened the scoring on the first shot of the game. It came at the 1:41 mark of the opening period. She collected a pass from first-year Natalie May and snapped a shot from the edge of the left faceoff circle past Hoff. It was O'Neil's first goal of the season.
  • Nazareth tied the game near the midway point of the opening frame. Skibinski collected a rebound in the left faceoff circle and flipped a shot over Murray's right leg. Skibinski's second goal of the season was assisted by Brooke Terry and Sami Quackenbush.
  • Boettcher scored the game-winning goal at the 2:56 mark of the second period. Standing in the slot, she redirected a shot from the point past Murray. Boettcher's fourth goal of the season was assisted by Ave Meteyer and Ella Cedrone.  
 
NEAR MISSES
  • The Herons had a couple of chances to tie the game but could not sneak a second shot past Hoff and the Golden Flyers' defense.
  • Late in the third period, First-year Bella Hacker had a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle robbed by Hoff.
  • With one minute left, O'Neil fired a shot from the left faceoff circle that was stopped by Hoff.
  • Twenty seconds later, Annabel Ziskin's point shot was blocked by a defender.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will close out its seven-game road trip next weekend, Dec. 6-7, when it heads to Rye, New York. The Herons will take on Manhattanville in a pair of non-conference contests.
