Hot-shooting Hobart wins 2024 finale at Maritime

BRONX, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team put a triumphant bow on 2024 with a 77-64 win at SUNY Maritime in the final athletic contest for HWS this calendar year. The Statesmen scorched the nets in Riesenberg Gymnasium, shooting a season-high 62.3% for the game, including 76% in the second half.

Hobart had four players finish in double figures led by senior Pat Healy's 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He sank three 3-pointers, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists. Sophomore Alex Moesch contributed 16 points. He was 6-of-13 shooting with a game-high four triples. Senior Hunter Meshanic and first-year Allen Mordi each contributed 10 points. The latter was perfect from the field, sinking all four of his shots, including a pair of treys.

The Statesmen finished with a 31-26 rebounding advantage. Senior Carter Meshanic pulled down a game-high eight boards to go with six points and six assists. Senior Aidan Rodgers handed out a game-high seven assists.

SUNY Maritime got a game-high 18 points from Tyler Anderson. He was joined in double digits by Jake Devaney and Jake Murphy with 17 points and 12 points, respectively.

COACH'S CORNER

"After a two-week break, it was nice to get back on the court and compete. Our offense hit a great rhythm in the second half which propelled us to the win. Having a strong contingent of Hobart alums, parents and supporters in the stands gave us extra energy as well!"
-- Hobart Head Coach Stefan Thompson '13

VIRTUAL HOME GAME
  • Hobart's roster features six players from the Greater NYC metropolitan area: Healy (East Northport, N.Y.), Ashton Khoorchand (Bayside, N.Y.), Monty Nedd (Ridgefield, N.J.), Dorian Paki (Staten Island), Justin Price (Yorktown, N.Y.), and Rodgers (Somers, N.Y.).

FOR THE RECORD
  • Hobart improved to 7-3 overall.
  • SUNY Maritime dropped to 5-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hobart built an 8-point lead midway through the first half thanks to a 15-4 run. Moesch, Rodgers and Healy all hit 3-pointers to support the surge, while Paki capped the run throwing down an ally-oop dunk off a Rodgers assist.
  • The Privateers closed the gap to just two late in the frame, but the Statesmen finished the session on a 6-2 run that sent them into the locker room with a 32-26 lead.
  • SUNY Maritime scored the first three points of the second half to make it a one-possession game again, but Hobart countered with a 20-8 run that saw Healy and Moesch sink back-to-back 3-pointers twice during the sequence.
  • Moesch's final three of the game gave the visitors their largest lead of the afternoon, 75-58.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
  • Hobart's shooting percent for the game is fourth on the program's single game list and the Statesmen's best shooting effort since setting the record (.685) at Keuka in 2021.
  • Hobart's 76% shooting second half is the program's best in at least a decade. Including today, Hobart has shot better than 70% in a half four times over the past decade. The most recent was a .743 clip in the first half of the 2021 Keuka game.
  • As a team, Hobart was credited with 22 assists against the Privateers. It's the most since the Statesmen logged 23 helpers against Keuka in 2022.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR
  • Hobart, which has won six of its last seven games, will return to Bristol Gym and Liberty League play on Saturday, Jan. 4. The Statesmen will ring in the new year against RPI at 4 p.m.
