#1 Hobart downs #11 Elmira 7-1 for 600th program win

GENEVA, N.Y.—Six different Statesmen scored as the top-ranked Hobart hockey team cruised to a 7-1 win over No. 11 Elmira this evening in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler. With the win, the Statesmen improve to 9-0-0 on the season, with a 7-0-0 mark in conference play.

Sophomore Bauer Morrissey led Hobart with three points on a goal and two assists. Classmate Chris Duclair chipped in two goals in the win to bring his season total to six. Junior Damon Beaver started in goal and made 25 saves in the win. He is now 5-0 on the season.
 
Nathan Young scored the lone goal for the Soaring Eagles (5-2-2, 5-1-1). Brody Haynes played all 60 minutes in goal for Elmira and made 26 saves in the loss.
 
STREAKING

  • The Statesmen are unbeaten in their last 34 contests (33-0-1).
  • With tonight's win, Hobart extended its win streak to 42 straight games at The Cooler.
  • The Statesmen have won their last 15 NEHC games and are unbeaten in their last 21 league games (20-0-1).

SCORING SUMMARY

  • Duclair opened the scoring just over five minutes into the first period after Morrissey dodged around the goal and dished a pass across the face of the net. Duclair was there to tap it home to give the Statesmen an early lead.
  • Hobart doubled its lead less than four minutes later after Ignat Belov tipped a Khalil Fontana shot past the Elmira goalie. Matthew Perryman was credited with the second assist after dishing the pass to Fontana to give the Statesmen a 2-0 lead.
  • After a scoreless second period, Hobart opened the scoring just 2:48 into the third period to extend their lead to 3-0. Mason Mara battled for the puck on the boards and slotted a pass to a sitting Easton Ryan. Ryan fired a shot past Haynes for his first career goal as a Statesmen.
  • Hobart extended its lead again roughly 12 minutes later after Connor Elliot stopped a Soaring Eagle counterattack. After stealing the puck, Elliot sent a long pass to Adam Mendelson who took his defender one-on-one and fired a low shot near post to give the Statesmen a 4-0 lead.
  • Less than a minute later, Elmira snapped the Statesmen scoring streak with its lone goal of the day. After a scramble in front of the net, Shane Miller found a cutting Young wide open on the back post. Young fired a shot past Beaver to get the Soaring Eagles on the scoreboard.
  • 46 seconds later, Hobart responded with its fifth goal of the game, this time off the stick of Morrissey. After a faceoff, Ryan received the puck and rushed around the back of the cage. He found an open Morrissey in front of goal who ripped a shot into the back of the net to give Hobart a four-goal lead again.
  • With just over two minutes remaining, Tamas Toth would score his first career goal for Hobart. After winning the puck in his defensive half, Toth rushed down the ice taking on three Elmira defenders. He split the final two defenders and slotted a shot past Haynes for his first career goal.
  • The Statesmen would close out the scoring with 30 seconds remaining in the game as Duclair notched his second goal of the day. After maintaining possession on the powerplay, Duclair ripped a shot from out front to give the Statesmen a six-goal lead. Morrissey and Conor Lally were credited with the assists on the final tally of the night.

Hobart will be back in action tomorrow to wrap up the 2024 portion of its schedule with a rematch against Elmira. Action between the Statesmen and the Soaring Eagles is set for 4 p.m. at The Cooler.
