GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart graduate student
Adam Shea scooped up game-high 11 ground balls to break the program's Division I era career record. Unfortunately, No. 20 Colgate rode a fast start to a 16-11 non-conference victory over the Statesmen on Boswell Field this afternoon.
The Raiders, who were playing their third game of the season, jumped out to a 6-1 lead after 15 minutes to earn their first win over the Statesmen, who were playing their season opener, since 2017.
Shea took all 30 faceoffs for Hobart, winning 20. He began the afternoon with 318 ground balls, six behind record holder Matthew Pedicine '19. With under three minutes remaining in the first half, Shea pulled even with Pedicine and with about a minute left, he grabbed his 325th career ground ball to seize the record. Shea finished the game with 11 ground balls, raising the standard to 329.

Chris Patterson led Hobart with four points apiece. Dattellas scored the first three goals for the Statesmen and added an assist, while Patterson notched two goals and two assists. In goal, sophomore

Colgate's starting attack combined for 15 points. Rory Connor had three goals and three assists, Jack Turner logged a game-high four goals and an assist and Michael Minicus added three goals and an assist. Defenseman Max Yates grabbed a team-high seven ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Goalie Matt LaCombe made 14 saves to earn the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Raiders, who upset No. 4 Penn State and lost at No. 9 Syracuse to start the season, came out firing on all cylinders.
- Thirty-one seconds into the game, Turner staked the visitors to a 1-0 lead. Connor followed with his first goal of the game and then Turner scored again before Hobart managed its first shot.
- Dattellas interrupted the run, but then Colgate fired home three more for a 6-1 lead after one quarter.
- The Statesmen settled down in the second quarter and outscored the Raiders 5-4 to make it a 10-6 game at the break.
- Dattellas completed his hat trick by the 10:36 mark of the second.
- Patterson, senior Chad Bach and junior Will Delano each scored their first goals of the season in the second quarter.
- Early in the third quarter, Hobart twice cut Colgate's lead to three.
- Patterson opened the second half scoring, finishing a feed from Bach 56 seconds in. Turner answered for Colgate to restore the four-goal edge, then Patterson set up graduate student John Herlihy's first goal of the year to make it 11-8 with 5:34 to go.
- The Raiders used a four-goal run to build a 15-8 advantage halfway through the fourth quarter.
- Hobart ended the game on a 3-1 run, including extra-man goals by junior Alex Rosa and senior Sam Ward.
TEAM TOTALS
- Colgate had a 52-44 advantage in shots and committed three fewer turnovers than Hobart (17-20).
- The Raiders also had the upper hand in ground balls (31-26) and clearing percentage (80%-63.6%).
- Hobart, which led the A10 in extra-man offense last season, converted 3-of-7 against Colgate, while the Raiders were 1-for-5 with the advantage.
TO THE MITTEN
- Hobart's first road trip of the season will mark the program's first visit to Ann Arbor, Michigan, for a regular season game. The Statesmen (0-1) are scheduled to take on the 14th-ranked Wolverines (0-1) Saturday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m.
- Michigan opened the season with a 19-11 loss at No. 3 Virginia yesterday.
- UM will play its home opener on Tuesday, hosting Canisius.
