AUBURN, N.Y.—Hobart senior catcher
Ty Gallagher went 2-for-5, including an RBI double, but Marywood slipped past the Statesmen 5-3 in the season opener for both teams this afternoon at Falcon Park.
Left fielder
Will Jones added an RBI triple for the Statesmen and also scored a run. Five Hobart pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts, including four by junior
Nicholas Franceschi.
Pacers designated hitter AJ Kuzior went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Left fielder Vinny D'Auria was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Marywood used 10 pitchers who combined for 12 strikeouts. Charlie Hamm got the win after throwing a 1-2-3 sixth inning. AJ Jordan got the save.
WHERE THERE'S A WILL
- Jones came to the plate in the top of the first with two outs and junior Nate Johnson standing on second. He laced a triple into the center field to drive home the first run of the season.
- An error on Jackson Fowle's fly ball to right allowed Jones to score and give the Statesmen a 2-0 lead after one inning.
- Junior Griffin Snyder got the start on the mound for Hobart and did not allow a hit in three innings of work.
THE COMEBACK
- Marywood tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth. Kuzior delivered an RBI single with two on and one out to break up the shutout.
- Nick Ruiz then delivered a bases loaded single to tie it.
- The Pacers pushed across two more runs in the top of the fifth, taking the lead on a RBI double by Max Slusser and padding the lead on another RBI single by Kuzior.
- Hobart got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Johnson singled, stole second and scored on Gallagher's double.
- Marywood scored its final run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning.
- The Statesmen loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Jordan got Gallagher to ground out to second to close out the game.
UP NEXT
- Hobart will play a three-game series against Lycoming at Wilkes' Bruggeworth Field next weekend. The team will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 2 and a single game on Sunday, March 3.
