Baseball splits doubleheader at Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y.—The Hobart baseball team split a doubleheader with Purchase this afternoon. The Statesmen earned a 10-1 win in Game 1 while the Panthers rallied for an 8-6 victory in Game 2.

Senior Ty Gallagher was 4-for-6, including two doubles and a triple, driving in three runs and scoring twice. First-year Sean Garvin added three hits with two RBIs and two runs scored. First-year lefty Trevor Kimball got the start in the opener. He struck out five and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning to earn his first collegiate win.

FOR THE RECORD
  • Hobart's record moves to 3-5.
  • Purchase remains a game over .500 with a 4-3 mark.

GAME 1
  • Hobart took control of the opener with a two-out rally in the second inning.
  • Garvin and first-year Jack Byrnes got it started with back-to-back singles.
  • Sophomore Christian Petry followed with a walk to load the bases.
  • Junior Nate Johnson delivered a single through the left side to plate Garvin and Byrnes.
  • Gallagher doubled, driving home Petry and Johnson.
  • Sophomore Will Jones also doubled, scoring Gallagher to make it 5-0.
  • The Statesmen also scored five runs in the third inning.
  • Sophomore Jackson Fowle, Petry and Gallagher all logged RBI triples in the inning.
  • The Panthers didn't get to Kimball until the bottom of the sixth. Jemal Betances broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single. Three hits later, Purchase pushed across its lone run. Kimball ended his day with a strike out to quell the threat.
  • First-year Charlie Forest needed just seven pitches to shut down the Panthers in the seventh.

COACH'S CORNER

"Trevor was on today taking a no hitter into the sixth. Our defense continues to make play big plays and game changing ones at that especially a highlight reel catch by Joe McCoy in center to end it. Offensively, we barreled up a lot of balls. We strung hits together with two outs, including the five-run inning with no one on. Anytime we can win 3 out of 4, it's a good weekend. I'm proud of this team and the makeup we show." –Hobart Head Coach Brad Cook

GAME 2
  • The Statesmen jumped on the Purchase starter in Game 2 as well, plating three runs in the second and two more in the third for a 5-0 lead.
  • In both innings, Garvin and first-year Gavin Brignall delivered RBI singles.
  • The Panthers answered with a three-run third to keep the game close.
  • Hobart tacked on a sixth run in the fourth inning on a double by Jones that scored Petry.
  • Purchase rallied in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs to take the lead. Tristen Abreu's two-run single gave the Panthers an 8-6 lead.
  • First-year Connor Schmiedlin led off the seventh with a single up the middle to bring the tying run to the plate, but Betances retired the next three batters to nail down the save.

COACH'S CORNER 2

"This was a tough one to take, especially after a great weekend. Winning four games in a weekend isn't easy, but we had the chance. Aaron [Forgues] gave us a good start, but caught some bad breaks, and we couldn't get off the field in that fifth inning. Our offense stayed hot and gave us enough to win, but we couldn't finish it out." – Cook

GIVE ME A BREAK
  • Hobart will begin spring break with three games at McDaniel in Westminster, Maryland, next weekend. The Statesmen will play a doubleheader against the Green Terror on March 16 and a single game on March 17.
