Baseball earns split in doubleheader at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md.—The Hobart baseball team split a doubleheader at McDaniel this afternoon. The Green Terror took the opener 6-3, but the Statesmen bounced back for a 5-1 win in Game 2.

Sophomore Will Jones delivered a 2-run single in first game and added a sac fly in the second game. Senior Ty Gallagher went 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI. On the mound, Trevor Kimball, Ryan Stewart and Nicholas Franceschi scattered six hits and allowed just a single run.

FOR THE RECORD
  • Hobart has won four of its last six to improve to 4-6.
  • McDaniel has won five of its last seven, moving to 7-6.

GAME 1
  • The Statesmen took an early lead on Nate Garrett's second inning single that plated Jones.
  • Todd Calhoun tied it in the bottom of the inning on an infield single.
  • The Green Terror tacked on single runs in the third and fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Jones delivered his two-RBI single in the top of the fifth to tie it, but McDaniel reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the frame with three runs.
  • Conor Henderson nailed down the save with two scoreless innings, but not before the Statesmen brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh.
  • Calhoun and Shea McKenna each had two RBIs in the seven inning game.

GAME 2
  • McDaniel manufactured a run in the second with Robert Weer laying down a sacrifice bunt to score Calhoun.
  • Hobart answered in the fourth when sophomore Drew Bolduc's sacrifice fly brought home Jones.
  • The Statesmen broke the game open with four hits, a Green Terror error and a hit by pitch.
  • Sophomore Jackson Fowle led off with a single to center.
  • With one out, first-year Sean Garvin reached on an error followed by first-year Connor O'Neil's RBI single to give Hobart the lead.
  • Sophomore Christian Petry delivered another Statesmen hit to load the bases and junior Nate Johnson plated another run with a third straight hit.
  • Gallagher brought home another run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases load.
  • Jones' fly ball to right was deep enough to allow Petry to scramble home for a 5-1 lead.
  • Kimball finished a fine start with a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth. He struck out seven on the day, allowing five hits and just a single run.
  • First-year Ryan Stewart made his Hobart debut in relief, facing one over the minimum in two innings of work, allowing just a single walk and handing a 5-1 lead to Franceschi in the ninth, who allowed a leadoff single and then struck out the next three to wrap up the win.

COACH'S CORNER

"I'm very happy with the way we bounced back. Our offense had runners on all game and were able to put up the crooked number in the 4th. Christian and Nate continue to set the table for us. Trevor built off of last week's great start to earn the win and Ryan and Nick gave us the three zeros out of the pen that we needed."
-- Hobart Head Coach Brad Cook

ONE MORE IN MARYLAND
  • Hobart and McDaniel will return to the diamond at noon on Sunday, March 17 to settle the series.
