ALTOONA, Pa.—Sophomore pitcher
Aaron Forgues gave the Hobart baseball team five strong innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out 10 batters in his first start this season, but Penn State Altoona staged a late rally to pull out an 8-5 victory this afternoon.
Forgues struck out the side in the bottom of the first and had at least one strike out in each inning. He got his final out with a called third strike. Forgues left the game in line to get the win, leading 3-1.
Hobart took the lead in the first inning. Sophomore
Will Jones singled to center, scoring junior
Nate Johnson. The Statesmen pushed across two more runs in the fourth thanks to a
Sean Garvin RBI single and a
Connor O'Neil RBI fielder's choice.
Garvin picked up another RBI in the sixth inning with a ground out that allowed Jones to score. Jones finished the game 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Lions seized the lead with a five-run seventh inning. Jimmy Mento sparked the comeback with a two-run homerun. Mento hit another two-run homer in the eighth inning, extending the home team's lead to 8-4.
Hobart added a single run in the ninth but left the potential tying run waiting on deck.
The Statesmen (5-7) are scheduled to open Liberty League play Friday, March 22 when they host RIT (4-9) at McDonough Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
