HENRIETTA, N.Y.—The Rochester Institute of Technology won both games of a doubleheader over Hobart this afternoon in the Liberty League opener for both teams. The Tigers won the opener 6-1 in seven innings and rallied for a 7-6 win in nine innings in Game 2.
For the Statesmen, first-year
Connor Schmiedlin produced a pair of RBI singles in the first game, while
Ty Gallagher smacked a two-run double in the second game.
GAME 1
- Schmiedlin singled to right in the first inning to score Gallagher and give Hobart the early lead.
- In the third, RIT tied it with a two-out single by Jarin Moses to center that scored Randy Dodig and took the lead on Charlie Slaymaker's two-run double two batters later.
- The Tigers tacked on two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth for a 6-1 lead, heading into the sixth inning.
- Sophomore Christian Petry led off the inning and reached on a throwing error. RIT hit the next three batters, bringing Petry around to score.
- Schmiedlin followed with Hobart's only hit of the inning, an RBI single.
- With one out and the bases still loaded, the Tigers gave the ball to Luc Rising, who put out the first, recording a five-out save.
GAME 2
- RIT, the visitors in both games despite playing on their home turf, scored twice in the top of the first inning.
- Hobart struck back with Gallagher's two-run double and an RBI ground out by Schmiedlin for a 3-2 lead after one.
- The Tigers pulled even in the top of the third, but the Statesmen reclaimed the lead with three runs in the sixth.
- With two outs and two on, Petry reached on an error that allowed first-year Ryan Stewart to score. A wild pitch scored first-year Jack Byrnes, then junior Nate Johnson's double plated Petry to make it 6-3.
- RIT got to the bullpen with two outs in the eight, scoring four runs to retake the lead.
- In the bottom of the eight, Hobart got the tying run to second, but left him stranded. The Statesmen were retired in order in the ninth.
FOR THE RECORD
- Hobart slips to 5-9 overall, 0-2 in the Liberty League.
- RIT improves to 6-9, 2-0.
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Statesmen will travel to the University of Rochester for a single game at 4 p.m. Friday, March 29. The Yellowjackets will visit Geneva the following day for a doubleheader starting at noon.
