GENEVA, N.Y.– The No. 34 ranked Hobart tennis team came from behind winning five singles matches to defeat No. 35 Vassar 5-4 to open conference play in Bristol Field House this afternoon. The Statesmen move to 6-3 on the season while the Brewers fall to 6-3.
Vassar won all three available doubles points despite Hobart forcing tiebreakers in two matches. Senior
Sean Pesin and sophomore
Nick Fischer fell 8-7 (7-2) to Nolan Kubiak and Ethan Mantell in the No. 1 spot, while juniors
Hyat Oyer and
Troy Steiner fell 8-7 (7-4) to Henry Zhang and Fernando Bauermeister in the No. 2 spot.
The Statesmen stormed back in singles action after falling behind 3-0 in doubles play. Pesin defeated Jay Wong 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot to extend his win streak to four straight. Fischer defeated Bauermeister in the No. 2 spot 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, while Oyer defeated Benjamin Almquist 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot for his fifth straight victory. Junior
Nick Grosso moves to 6-3 on the season after defeating Zhang 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot.
Senior
Winter Fagerberg clinched the come-from-behind victory for Hobart in the No. 5 spot. He defeated Mantell 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to move to 5-3 on the season. Fagerberg's match-clinching win was his fifth straight win in the No. 5 spot.
