Herons tripped up by Bombers in conference thriller

GENEVA, N.Y. — The William Smith tennis team took on Ithaca in a Liberty League matchup this afternoon in Bristol Field House. The Bombers edged the Herons 5-4 in the thrilling conference matchup to move to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League. William Smith falls to 3-7 on the season, and 0-2 in conference play. 

The Herons earned one of three available points in doubles play as juniors Julia Pida and Natalie Haythorn defeated Kendall Curley and Sabrina Cheung 8-4 in the No. 2 spot. The duo is now 3-2 in dual matches this season. 

William Smith went toe-to-toe with Ithaca in singles play, earning three out of six available points. Junior Isabelle Goings-Perrot defeated Lauren Rodriguez 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot for her second straight victory this week. 

In the No. 3 spot, Haythorn earned her second win of the day, defeating Curley 6-2, 6-2. She moves to 4-5 on the season and is 2-2 in the No. 3 spot. Sophomore Marin Montagne defeated Aenessa Rylski 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot to move to 5-2 on the season. 

In an exciting matchup with Ava Casell-Lapetina in the No. 5 spot, first-year Grace Magna was narrowly defeated 7-6 (7-1), 0-6, 3-6.  Casell-Lapetina clinched the match for the Bombers with the win. 

UP NEXT: 

William Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, April 3, when it heads to Rochester to take on the University of Rochester in a nonconference matchup. First serve between the Herons and the Yellowjackets is set for 4 p.m.
