Montagne wins twice as Herons top Yellowjackets 6-3

ROCHESTER, N.Y.— The William Smith College tennis team earned four tiebreaker wins in singles play this afternoon to defeat the University of Rochester 6-3 in a nonconference matchup at the Goergen Athletic Center. With the win, the Herons move to 4-7 on the season, while the Yellowjackets fall to 3-7.
 
William Smith took a 2-1 lead in doubles play, winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Juniors Natalie Haythorn and Julia Pida defeated Jaclyn Dron and Jasmin Toor 8-5 in the No. 2 spot, while sophomores Marin Montagne and Maddy Buck defeated Sahithi Mathukumilli and Neha Dania 8-5 in the No. 3 spot. Haythorn and Pida win their third straight and move to 4-2 in dual matches, while Montagne and Buck remain undefeated at 3-0.
 
The Herons continued to roll in singles action, winning four of six matches against the Yellowjackets. Junior Isabelle Goings-Perrot came from behind to defeat Sanjama Karnam 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 2 spot to move to 3-4 on the season.
 
First-year Mae Kellersman got back in the win column as she defeated Dania 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 spot. Montagne continued to impress in singles play and moved to 6-2 in dual matches after defeating Dron 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in the No. 5 spot.
 
First-year Grace Magna clinched the win for William Smith with her victory in the No. 6 spot. She defeated Mathukumilli 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 for her third dual match win of the season.

William Smith will be back in action Saturday April 6, when it heads to Saratoga Springs to take on No. 43 Skidmore (4-3, 2-0) in Liberty League play. First serve between the Herons and the Thoroughbreds is set for 9 a.m.
