Game Recap: Hobart Baseball | | Ken DeBolt

Statesmen tame Wolves twice to push win streak to 7

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Keuka today at McDonough Park. The Statesmen cruised to an 8-2 victory in Game 1 and rallied from a four-run deficit to take the nightcap 7-6 in nine innings.

In the sunshine of the opener, Hobart pounded out 12 hits, including two each for junior Nate Johnson, senior Ty Gallagher, sophomore Nate Garrett and sophomore Richard Tremble. In his first start, Tremble was the only Statesman with more than one RBI. He also had one of four stolen bases by Hobart.

On the mound, seven Statesmen pitched one inning apiece, limiting the Wolves to just three hits while ringing up 11 strike outs. Hobart's staff didn't allow a hit after the second inning.

If Game 1 went exactly according to plan for the Statesmen, Game 2 was a grind. Hobart trailed 6-2 going into the seventh, but rallied to tie the game and force extra innings. In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Drew Bolduc came up with the bases loaded and one out and delivered a walk-off single to center. First-year Jack Byrnes pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit to earn the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game 1
  • Hobart sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, quickly turning a 1-0 Keuka lead into a 6-1 Statesmen advantage.
  • Sophomore Christian Petry, Gallagher, first-year Sean Garvin, Garrett, Tremble and Byrnes drove home runs in the pivotal first inning.
  • The Statesmen tacked on single insurance runs in the fourth and fifth to pad their lead.
  • All seven Hobart pitchers recorded at least one strikeout with first-year Alex Frank logging a team-best three Ks.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Game 2
  • The Statesmen took a 2-0 lead after one inning, while Hobart retired the first seven Wolves before Owen Garvey worked a walk. Then with two outs, Alex Evans was hit by a pitch bringing Kyle Wood to the plate. He drove a 2-2 fastball over the left centerfield wall to give Keuka its first lead of the day.
  • Garvey had a two-out RBI single in the fourth to double the visitors' lead.
  • The Wolves scored two more in the sixth, including a solo home run down the leftfield line by Carlos Fantauzzi.
  • With just three outs remaining, Hobart rallied. A Keuka error, a hit-by-pitch and a walk loaded the bases. Petry hit a grounder to short, bringing first-year Gavin Brignall home. The Wolves got one out at second, but couldn't turn the double play on the speedy Petry.
  • Then with the bases loaded again, Garvin singled through the right side to score Petry and Tremble, trimming the Wolves' lead to just one.
  • With runners at second and third and only one out, Drew Bolduc hit a tapper back to the mound. Keuka pitcher Lucas Gilbert field the ball and gave a quick look at sophomore Will Jones, who was hung up 30-feet of the bag. When Jones made a jab step back toward third, Gilbert threw to first to retire Bolduc. That allowed Jones to scramble home with the tying run.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Hobart got runners to second and third with one out.
  • The Wolves loaded the bases with an intentional walk to bring Bolduc to the plate, who delivered the game-winning hit in the clutch.
