POTSDAM, N.Y.—Sophomore
Richard Tremble's second inning home run provided all of the offense the Hobart pitching staff needed this afternoon. Sophomore
Teck Nash, sophomore
Max Friedlander and junior
Nicholas Franceschi combined to shut out Clarkson in a 3-0 Liberty League West win for the Statesmen.
With first-year
Connor Schmiedlin on base, Tremble, who missed all of last season due to injury, hit his first collegiate home run in just his sixth career at bat, giving Hobart an early 2-0 lead.
Both teams endured a lengthy rain delay, but when play resumed, Nash kept the Golden Knights' hitters off balance. He scattered six hits across seven innings, striking out six while walking only two. It matched the longest outing of his career. Nash was at his best in even numbered innings, retiring the side in order in the second, fourth and sixth.
Friedlander took over in the eighth, allowing a pair of one-out hits, but sat down the next two Knights with a strikeout and a ground out to work out of trouble.
Similarly, Franceschi worked into and out of trouble in the ninth. A line out and strikeout put him one out away from his second save of the season, but Clarkson extended the drama with an infield hit and a walk, but Franceschi got a pop up to second to finish off the win.
Hobart manufactured an insurance run in the top of the ninth. With one out, Tremble was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second. First-year
Jack Byrnes worked a walk and Tremble stole third on ball four. Byrnes swiped second ahead of a walk by junior
Nate Johnson that loaded the bases. Sophomore
Christian Petry flyout to center was deep enough to score Tremble.
Hobart picked up its eighth straight win, improving to 14-11 overall. The Statesmen are 5-4 in the Liberty League West. Hobart is in a virtual tie for third place in the West with RIT (12-15, 6-5), which was swept by St. Lawrence (10-16, 4-8) this weekend.
Hobart and Clarkson (8-15, 0-9) will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
