Game Recap: Hobart Baseball | | Ken DeBolt

Hobart splits twin bill, takes series at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The Hobart baseball team split a doubleheader at Clarkson this afternoon, winning the three-game series 2-1. The Statesmen jumped out to a 5-0 lead in Game 1, but the Golden Knights rallied for a 9-5 win. In the nightcap, Hobart scored three times in the top of the 11th and held on for a 9-7 victory.

DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN
  • Just five days removed from driving in the tying run and later the winning run in an extra-inning triumph over Keuka, sophomore Drew Bolduc did it again.
  • He tied Game 2 today in the top of the ninth and delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 11th.
  • Trailing 6-5 with one out in the top of the ninth, sophomore Will Jones singled and first-year Sean Garvin doubled putting runners on second and third for Bolduc.
  • With the infield in, Bolduc hit a sharp two-hooper to short. Jones, who was running on contact, slide across the plate just ahead of the tag.
  • In the 11th, Garvin came up with one on and two out. He hit a grounder to second that was bobbled on the transfer from the glove to the throwing hand. The error extended the inning and cost the Golden Knights a win.
  • Like his walk-off against the Wolves, Bolduc served up a single to center that scored senior Ty Gallagher. The centerfielder's throw to the plate went all the way to the backstop, allowing Garvin and Bolduc to move up to third and second, respectively.
  • First-year Connor O'Neil followed with a two-run single to left adding important insurance runs.
  • Bolduc was 1-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored in the game. O'Neil was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Will Jones had a game-high three hits, a walk, a RBI and scored a run.
  • Junior Nocholas Franceschi pitched the final three innings for Hobart, surviving a bumpy bottom of the 11th to earn the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 1
  • The Statesmen sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning of the opener, but managed just one hit after that frame (a seventh inning double by senior Ty Gallagher).
  • Will Jones' RBI infield single started the scoring.
  • With the bases loaded, O'Neil hit a sacrifice fly to left to make it a 2-0 game.
  • With runners on the corners, the Statesmen executed a double steal with Jones swiping home for a 3-0 lead.
  • Nate Garrett doubled to left to score Garvin and first-year Jack Byrnes singled up the middle to bring Garrett home.
  • Clarkson got one run back in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the third.
  • The Golden Knights took control of the game with a five-run fourth.
  • On the mound, Carter Gould threw five, no-hit innings in relief of starter Mateo Sarabia to get the win.
  • Derrick Lewis pitched the final three innings to earn the save.
