Herons sweep Knights for nonconference win

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith tennis team defeated SUNY Geneseo 9-0 this afternoon in a nonconference matchup in Bristol Field House. With the win, the Herons move to 6-11 on the season, while the Knights fall to 8-5 overall.

William Smith grabbed the early momentum against Geneseo, winning all three doubles matches this afternoon. Sophomore Haley Levine and junior Natalie Haythorn handed Natalie Pipes and Rory Tobin their first loss of the season as they defeated the Geneseo duo 8-2 in the No. 1 spot. Levine and Haythorn earned their first win as partners in dual matches this season and moved to 4-4 overall.

Sophomores Marin Montagne and Maddy Buck continued to shine for William Smith in doubles play as they defeated Alex Galle and Samantha Rava 8-4 in the No. 2 spot. The duo is now 6-1 on the season and is 2-0 in the No. 2 spot. First-year Mae Kellersman and junior Julia Pida rounded out the success in doubles play for the Herons and defeated Talia Wutz and Elena DeRiso 8-1 in the No. 3 spot for their first dual match victory of the season.

The Herons continued their momentum into singles play, sweeping all six matches over the Knights. Levine earned her second win of the day as she defeated Pipes in the No. 1 spot 6-2, 7-5 for her fourth victory of the season. Kellersman got back in the win column as she defeated Tobin 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot.

Montagne continued to impress in singles play for William Smith as she defeated Rava 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot. She is leading the team with an 8-5 record in dual matches this season. Pida chipped in a 6-4, 6-2 win over Abigail Rockwood in the No. 5 spot to move to 5-4 in dual matches this season.

Buck remains undefeated in dual matches this season and moved to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Katie Kujawa in the No. 6 spot. Haythorn officially clinched the win for William Smith in the No. 2 spot. She defeated Galle 7-5, 6-3 for her fifth victory of the season.

William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday April 21, when it welcomes Hartwick for a nonconference matchup. First serve between the Herons and the Hawks is set for noon in Bristol Field House.
