ITHACA, N.Y.—The Hobart baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader against regionally-ranked Ithaca this afternoon, but clinched a spot in the Liberty League Crossover Series thanks to a Clarkson win over St. Lawrence.
The Bombers (25-9, 14-4 LL) took the opener 8-4 and secured the series finale 9-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 1
- Ithaca got all of the offense it needed in the first two innings.
- The Bombers struck for one run in the first and four more in the second, including a three-run homer by Colin Shashaty.
- Through six innings, the Bomber lead was 8-0.
- Hobart got one run back in the seventh and made things interesting in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate.
- Ty Gallagher, who was 2-for-3 in the game, doubled to right center to score Nate Johnson and make it 8-2.
- Will Jones was hit by a pitch and Connor Schmiedlin reached on an error to load the bases.
- Sean Garvin's infield single made it 8-3 and Drew Bolduc's bases loaded walk 8-4.
- With two outs, Jack Byrnes represented the tying run, but he popped up to second to end the game.
The start of Game 2 was delayed by rain. During the wait, Clarkson beat St. Lawrence 6-1, meaning the Statesmen could finish no lower than tied for fourth in the Liberty League West with the Saints. Hobart holds the tiebreaker over SLU thanks to its three-game sweep of the Saints earlier this month. So the Statesmen earned the West's fourth and final spot in the crossover series.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 2
- Ithaca starter Danny Drotos gave up just two hits in five innings before turning it over to the bullpen that continued his strong effort on the hill.
- The Bombers' Logan Scully touched off a seven-run fourth with a two-run home run.
GAME NOTES
- Hobart's Christian Petry singled in both games to extend his streak of reaching base to 36 consecutive games.
UP NEXT
