CANANDAIGUA, N.Y.—The Hobart baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against St. Lawrence this afternoon, sweeping the three-game series with the Saints. The Statesmen won Game 1 with a dramatic walkoff home run in the bottom of the 10th inning and took Game 2 6-2.
Hobart got strong starts in both games with first-year
Trevor Kimball throwing six innings and striking out seven while allowing two unearned runs in the opener and junior
Griffin Snyder allowing just two runs in seven innings, earning the win in the finale. Reliever
Nicholas Franceschi won Game 1 allowing just one hit over the final 2 2-3 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 1
- The teams both posted a single run in the second inning.
- Hobart eased into the lead in the bottom of the third. With one out and runners on the corners, senior Ty Gallagher grounded up the middle. First-year Sean Garvin came home while the Saints got one out at second, but couldn't turn the double play to prevent the run.
- The Saints tied the game in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of a Hobart throwing error to knot the game at 2-2.
- The Statesmen loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn't regain the lead.
- The game remained tied through nine innings with Hobart and St. Lawrence leaving a combined 28 runners on base.
- SLU got a runner to third with two outs in the 10th, but Franceschi induced a ground out to get out of the jam.
- Garvin led off the bottom of the 10th and launched the first pitch he saw over the rightfield wall for his first collegiate home run and a 3-2 Hobart victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 2
- Similarly, Game 2 was knotted at 2-2 through five and a half innings, but Hobart didn't wait for the drama of extra innings to seize the lead.
- The Statesmen scored in the bottom of the sixth, seventh and eighth to even its Liberty League record at 4-4.
- In the sixth, first-year Ryan Stewart, who pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings in Game 1, delivered the go-ahead hit that scored Gallagher.
- In the seventh, Hobart loaded the bases with no outs and sophomore Will Jones singled to left center to score sophomore Christian Petry and first-year Connor O'Neil.
- O'Neil, who was 3-for-3 in the game, drove home the final run of the game in the eighth, singling home Stewart.
- Sophomore Max Friedlander earned a six-out save, allowing just one hit in the final two innings.
GAME NOTES
- Garvin had hits in both games today, extending his team best hitting streak to seven games.
- Petry reached base safely in both games, extending his streak to 23 games. He tripled in Game 1 and drew a walk in Game 2.
