GENEVA, N.Y.—The 20th-ranked William Smith soccer team was edged by Washington and Lee 2-0 in a non-conference contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With today's loss, the Herons are now 1-1-0 on the season.

Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons.
Megan Zimmerman and Ann Riley Huber scored for the Generals (1-1-0). Abby Groff played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- William Smith finished the game with a 9-6 edge in shots.
- The Herons also had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Riley Huber opened the scoring in the seventh minute. She fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box and curled the ball inside the right goalpost. Maren Brown was awarded an assist on the goal.
- Megan Zimmerman gave the Generals a 2-0 lead with her first goal of the season. She collected a pass from Sophie Berman and blasted a shot past a charging Nelson.
MISSED OPPORTUNITIES
- William Smith had its chance to score, but Groff was up to the task. In the fourth minute, Marjorie Plants had a shot turned aside by a diving save.
- In the 55th minute, Kaleigh Darby was when Groff dove to her right and made a stop.
- In the 74th minute, Groff kept the shutout alive with a stop on a shot by first-year Grace Metzler.
