#19 Tartans down #20 Herons

PITTSBURGH, Pa.—Nineteenth-ranked Carnegie Mellon scored three goals in the second half as it knocked off 20th-ranked William Smith 4-1 in the opening game of the 2024 Double Tree by Hilton – Suites Pittsburgh Downtown Tartan Cup.  With the loss, the Herons fall to 1-2-0 on the season while the Tartans are now 1-0-1
 
Senior Marjorie Plants scored the goal for William Smith. Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.
 
Cecelia Dieterich had four points on a goal and two assists for Carnegie Mellon. Abby O'Connor went the distance in goal for the Tartans and made five saves.
 
MATCH SUMMARY
  • Audrey Bianco opened the scoring in the 36th minute. She collected a pass from Dieterich and slipped a left-footed shot into the lower right corner of the goal.
  • Dieterich gave Carnegie Mellon a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute when she converted on a penalty kick.
  • Five minutes later, Plants broke up the shutout bid. She stole the ball in the midfield, dribbled downfield and chipped a shot over O'Connor. It was her third goal of the season.
  • In the 84th minute, Ayana Curto scored her first goal of the season She fired home a pass from Emma Shirzard.
  • Giulia Balestieri rounded out the scoring in the 88th minute. Her first goal of the year was assisted by Dieterich.
