Herons conclude action at Mary Hosking Invitational

GENEVA, NY – The William Smith tennis team opened its season by hosting the annual Mary Hosking Invitational at HWS Tennis Center this weekend. The Herons hosted the invitational that saw players represent SUNY Geneseo, Ithaca College, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), University of Rochester, Rensselaer Polytechnics Institute (RPI), St. Lawrence University and Union College. 

William Smith was represented in each of the following brackets:

Flight A Singles

Junior Haley Levine started off strong with an 8-2 victory over Ithaca's Sabrina Cheung in the first round of the Flight A singles bracket. Levine then fell in the second round to Maya McDaniel from RIT. 

Flight B Singles

Sophomore Mae Kellersman had a great opening to her season, defeating Maya Clinard from RIT, 8-1. In the second round, Kellersman fell to RPI's Victoria Sarabosing, who eventually advanced to the final of the Flight B singles bracket.

Flight C Singles

Senior Julia Pida started out hot with an 8-5 win over Joann Catalano from Geneseo. Pida was then bested by Anushka Jaiswal from RPI, who was eventually crowned the champion of the Flight C singles bracket. 

Flight D Singles

First-year Mia Jacobs had a strong showing in her collegiate debut, defeating Ashlyn Strobel from St. Lawrence University, 6-0. Jacobs then fell to Flight D champion, Taylor Chandler from RPI. 

After a first-round loss to Union's Page Tromblee, Mia Tetrault showed strong in the consolation bracket, defeating Elena DeRiso from Geneseo, 6-3, and RIT's Devon Mills 7-5. Tetrault eventually fell in the consolation finals to Kennedy Alexis from Union College. 

Flight A Doubles

The pairing of Pida and senior Isabelle Goings-Perrot put up a strong fight in the first round of the Flight A Doubles bracket against Ithaca's Cheung and Ava Casell. The Bomber duo bested the Heron pair in a tie breaker, 8-7 (7-4) to advance to the quarter finals.

Flight B Doubles

Senior Emma Johnston and first-year Bethany Walker faced Scarlett Carrara and Calista Finkelstein from Union College in their first match as a doubles pair. After being up 4-3 in the first-round, the Heron pair then fell to the Dutchwoman, 4-8. On Sunday, Johnston defeated Carrara in an exhibition singles match, 6-4.

William Smith will be back Sept. 21, when it travels to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., for the ITA Northeast Regional Championships.
