Flying Dutchmen clip Herons 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y.— The William Smith field hockey team fell 2-1 to Lebanon Valley College to conclude the 2024 William Smith Classic this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons fell to 3-3 on the season, while the Flying Dutchmen remain undefeated and move to 5-0 on the season.

Despite the final score, William Smith put on an impressive showing that saw the Herons control the play for most of the game. The Herons held a 21-5 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 edge in shots on target. William Smith also enjoyed a 15-7 advantage in penalty corners. Ella Weidenhammer kept the Flying Dutchmen in the game with an impressive 10 save performance against William Smith.

First-year Caroline Kogut scored the lone goal for the Herons this afternoon. Her second goal of the weekend was her fourth of the season. She sits at nine points on four goals, and one assist this season. Senior Rebecca Mantione was credited with the assist on the goal for her team-leading third assist of the season. Kogut and Mantione combined for seven shots, landing three on target. Junior Lily Gutch tallied three shots this afternoon, landing two on target.

First-year Baker Jeremiah played all 60 minutes in goal for William Smith and recorded two saves in the loss. She is now 3-3 on the season.

MATCH MOMENTS:

  • Lebanon Valley opened the scoring after being awarded a penalty corner in the seventh minute. Gracie Johnson inserted the ball to Sorrell Long who fired off a shot past Jeremiah to give the Flying Dutchmen the early lead.
  • Just under a minute later, William Smith responded off of a penalty corner of their own. Kogut received the ball at the top of the arc and dished off a pass to Mantione. Mantione fired right back to Kogut who slotted the ball into the back of the net.
  • The Flying Dutchmen closed out the scoring in the 42nd minute after Claire Weidenhammer countered the Heron defense and fired off a shot on target. Jenna Angstadt redirected the shot past Jeremiah to give Lebanon Valley the one goal lead.
  • William Smith applied the pressure in the fourth quarter, firing off nine shots and earning four penalty corners. Ella Weidenhammer stood tall in goal for the Flying Dutchmen, keeping the Herons off the board earning her fifth victory of the season.

UP NEXT:

William Smith will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 21 when it welcomes No. 12 SUNY Cortland to Geneva for a nonconference matchup. Action between the Herons and the Red Dragons is set for 1 p.m. on McCooey Field.
