#11 Red Dragons down Herons 2-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team was edged by 11th-ranked Cortland 2-0 in a hard-fought non-conference contest on McCooey Field this afternoon.  The Herons fall to 3-4 on the season while the Red Dragons improve to 7-0.
 
First-year Baker Jeremiah played all 60 minutes in goal for William Smith and made two saves. First-year Caroline Kogut added a defensive save.
 
Hanna Corrigan scored both goals for Cortland. Emma Morgan started in goal and made two saves.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Despite the final score, William Smith hung tough with the 11th-ranked Red Dragons. Both teams had nine shots in the game. William Smith also had a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners.
 
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • Cortland nearly opened the scoring in the 13th minute off of a penalty corner.  Corrigan's shot was stopped by Kogut.
  • Early in the second quarter, William Smith had a flurry of chances off a penalty corner, but Rebecca Mantione's shot was blocked. On the next corner, Kogut just missed the left goalpost.
  • Corrigan broke the deadlock in the 29th minute. She broke up a clearing attempt and fired a hard backhanded shot past Jeremiah for her fifth goal of the season.
  • The Herons nearly tied the game in the final minute of the half. Kogut fired a shot from the top of the arc that was stopped by Morgan.
  • The teams traded chances in the third quarter, but neither team could find the back of the net.
  • Corrigan added an insurance goal in the 50th minute. She fired home a shot off a penalty corner for her sixth goal of the year. It was assisted by Jamie Snyder.  
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when it welcomes Hamilton to McCooey Field. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
