Game Recap: William Smith Field Hockey | | Zack Koons

Field Hockey falls to #23 Hamilton 3-1

GENEVA, N.Y.— The William Smith field hockey team concluded its six-game homestand with a 3-1 loss to No. 23 Hamilton College this evening on McCooey Field. With the loss, the Herons fall to 3-5 on the season, while the Continentals move to 4-3 overall.

First-year Mia Batchelder scored the lone goal for William Smith in the 33rd minute after classmate Ana Dios Vidal dished off a pass to a wide open Batchelder to cut the Herons deficit to one in the third quarter. Batchelder was credited with her second goal of the season, while Dios Vidal earned her first career point for William Smith with the assist.

Hamilton enjoyed a 10-4 advantage in shots this evening, including a 6-2 edge in shots on target. William Smith held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners against the ranked Continentals. First-year Caroline Kogut led the Herons with two shots, landing one on goal. She also tallied a defensive save for William Smith in the loss.

First-year Baker Jeremiah played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons and recorded two saves in the loss. She is now 3-5 on the season.

MATCH MOMENTS:

  • The Continentals opened the scoring eight minutes into the game off the stick of Lily Truchon. A Hamilton attacker fired off a shot from outside the arc which was blocked by a Heron defender. The ball fell perfectly to the stick of Truchon who slotted the ball past Jeremiah for the first goal of the game.
  • Delaney Grace doubled the lead for the visitors at the 21:11 mark. Becky Felker fired off a shot that Jeremiah originally saved. The rebound fell right to the stick of Grace who fired off a shot into the back of the goal giving Hamilton a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • The Herons came out strong in the second half, applying pressure high forcing giveaways by the Continental backline. William Smith capitalized off the early momentum as Batchelder tallied her second goal of the season. Junior Lily Gutch caused a Heron fast break and slotted a ball across the field to a rushing Dios Vidal. Dios Vidal sliced by one defender and slotted the ball across net to a wide open Batchelder who tapped the ball into the back of the net to cut the Continental lead to one.
  • Hamilton responded roughly five minutes later off a counter attack of their own. After cutting through two defenders, Sammy Higgins fired off a shot from the top of the arc. Lydon Kelley stuck a stick out last second and deflected the ball a different direction past Jeremiah to regain the two-goal lead.
  • The Continentals maintained the momentum in the fourth quarter and kept the Herons off the board for the final 15 minutes, closing out the game on top 3-1.
