Phillips’ brace sends Statesmen past Bombers 4-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart junior Quinn Phillips scored twice in the first half and added an assist as the Statesmen knocked off Ithaca 4-1 in a Liberty League contest on a wet and rainy afternoon on Cozzens Field.

In addition to Phillips' five points, sophomore La Zai Outerbridge added a goal and an assist in the victory. Junior Thomas Chyzowych played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.

Landon Hellwig scored the goal for the Bombers. Brayden Milbrandt started in goal and made four saves.

  • With the win, Hobart is now 1-4-2 on the season with a 1-1-0 record in Liberty League play.
  • Ithaca is now 4-3-0 this season with a 0-1-0 record in conference play.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Both teams finished the game with 15 shots, but Hobart had an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen finished the game with a 10-8 advantage in corner kicks. All eight of Ithaca's corner kicks came in the second half.

  • Ithaca opened the scoring in the 18th minute after an unlucky bounce in the 18-yard box. Hellwig pounced on a loose ball and slipped a shot across the goal line for his second goal of the season.

  • Outerbridge rounded out the scoring in the 77th minute. After breaking up an Ithaca possession, he was sent on a breakaway by senior Frederick Madsen. Outerbridge carried the ball into the 18-yard box and slipped a shot past Milbrandt

COACH'S CORNER
"I'm very happy for the guys and pleased with the effort," Head Coach Shawn Griffin said. "We've played well recently yet just couldn't get the results. We got three big points in the Liberty League which is hard to get especially against a very good Ithaca team."

UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when it welcomes Skidmore to Cozzens Field. The Liberty League contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
