Statesmen, Thoroughbreds play to 1-1 draw

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart soccer team and Skidmore played to a 1-1 draw in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the result, Hobart is now 1-4-3 overall with a 1-1-1 record in Liberty League play.
 
Senior Frederick Madsen scored for the Statesmen. Junior Thomas Chyzowych played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
 
Colin Goodhines scored for the Thoroughbreds (1-1-5, 0-0-1).  Will Devall started in goal and made five saves.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Today's game was the 35th meeting between Hobart and Skidmore. The teams tied for the 13th time.
  • It was the ninth draw in 17 meetings in Geneva.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • Hobart finished the opening 45 minutes with an 8-3 advantage in shots and carried most of the play.
  • In the second minute, sophomore Matheus Souza ripped a shot from outside the 18-yard box that was smothered by Dewall.
  • Five minutes later, Madsen just missed the left goalpost with a shot.
  • In the 16th minute, the Statesmen appeared to take a 1-0 lead, but Mano Veldt's goal off a corner kick was waved off because a player was offsides.
  • Senior Luke Ryan and Griffin Patterson had chances in the 30th minute, but could not find the back of the net. Ryan's shot was stopped by the Skidmore goalie and Patterson's attempt was blocked.
  • Chyzowych made a key save in the 27th minute on a shot from Connor Mansfield.
  • In the 64th minute, first-year Brady Leitner nearly opened the scoring. He dribbled around the Skidmore goalie and fired a shot that was stopped by a defender.
  • The play evened out in the second half with both teams coming up with key scoring chances.
  • Hobart broke the deadlock in the 68th minute, Madsen chipped a shot past Dewall for his first goal of the season. Joe Pariano assisted the tally.
  • Skidmore drew level in the 75th minute, on a goal by Colin Goodhines. He ran onto a lead pass from Perry Scheft and slipped a shot past Chyzowych.
  • Chyzowych made the save of the game in the 83rd minute. Goodhines dribbled around two defenders and was one-on-one with the goalie. While diving to his right Chyzowych made a kick save to keep the game knotted at one.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hobart finished the contest with an 18-10 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen had nine corner kicks and the Thoroughbreds had three.
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 5, when it welcomes Clarkson to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and is a part of Homecoming and Family Weekend. The contest will also serve as Hobart Soccer's alumni weekend game.
