GRANTHAM, Pa.— The William Smith field hockey team's comeback fell short as the Herons fell 3-1 to Messiah University this afternoon on Anderson Field. William Smith falls to 3-6 overall with the loss, while the Falcons move to 4-4 on the season.
Junior Abby Jones scored the lone goal for the Herons in the 42nd minute after first-year Ana Dios Vidal beat her defender one-on-one and dished a pass to an open Jones in front of goal. Jones' second goal of the season cut William Smith's deficit to one heading into the final quarter.
Messiah enjoyed a 13-4 advantage in shots this afternoon, including a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Falcons also held an 11-2 edge in penalty corners against the Herons and recorded two of their goals off of penalty corner opportunities.
First-year Baker Jeremiah played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons and recorded two saves in the loss. She is now 3-6 on the season.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- The Falcons opened the scoring with 2:35 remaining in the opening quarter as Hailey Womer turned around her defender and sliced a shot to the back post to give Messiah an early 1-0 lead. Teagan Murrie was credited with the assist.
- Messiah doubled their lead in the 41st minute after being awarded back-to back penalty corners. Kelsey Heltzel inserted the ball to Ellie Lefever who rocketed a shot past Jeremiah to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
- The Herons responded less than two minutes later as Dios Vidal stormed past her defender on the endline and dished a pass to Jones in the middle. Jones swiped her shot to the bottom left corner of the goal, cutting William Smith's deficit to one. Dios Vidal was credited with an assist for the second-straight game for the Herons.
- Messiah was close to doubling their lead in the 51st minute as Chelsea Carpenter's shot was denied by the post. First-year Caroline Kogut was there to clean up the mess and clear the ball away, keeping the score 2-1.
- The Falcons added an insurance goal in the 56th minute after capitalizing on a penalty corner. Mallory Kline received the ball at the top of the arc and fired off a shot that trickled through traffic in front of the goal and into the back of the net. Kelsey Heltzel was credited with her second assist of the day.
