#12 Herons tame Tigers, win 4th straight

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 12th-ranked William Smith soccer team scored a goal in each half as it knocked off Rochester Institute of Technology 2-1 in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With their fourth-straight win, the Herons are now 5-2-1 overall with a 1-0-0 mark in conference play.
 
Senior Ava Brazie and sophomore Kaleigh Darby scored for William Smith. Senior Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save.
 
Jessie Gomez scored the goal for RIT (3-2-2, 0-1-0).  Emily Sanchez played all 90 minutes in goal and made seven saves.
 
KEY STATS
  • William Smith finished the game with a 19-3 advantage in shots, 9-2 in shots on goal. Today's three shots were the fewest in a game for RIT this season.
  • The Herons had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

  • Junior Ruth Hotaling had William Smith's first chance in the third minute. Her shot was turned aside by Sanchez.
  • In the 28th minute, first-year Nell Dwyer had a shot on a free kick turned aside by Sanchez.  Senior Marjorie Plants' rebound attempt was blocked by a defender.
  • The Herons opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. On a corner kick, Brazie redirected a cross from Hotaling past Sanchez for her second goal of the season.
  • In the 40th minute, junior Julia Accioly had a scoring chance turned aside by the RIT goalie.
  • In the opening stages of the second half, Hotaling fired a shot off the left goalpost. Senior Ava Ruppersberger pounced on the rebound, but her shot was stopped by Sanchez
  • Darby gave William Smith a two-goal lead in the 57th minute. She collected a crossing pass from Ruppersberger and blasted a shot into the net. It was her third goal of the season.
  • Gomez broke up the shutout bid with a penalty kick goal in the 78th minute.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will begin a three-game road trip on Saturday, Sept. 28, when it takes on Skidmore. The game in Saratoga Springs is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
