#12 William Smith, Skidmore play to scoreless draw

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The 12th-ranked William Smith soccer team and Skidmore played to a scoreless draw in a Liberty League contest on Wachenheim Field this afternoon.
 
Graduate student Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save as she earned her third shutout of the season.
 
Avery Rogers played all 90 minutes in goal for Skidmore and made five saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With the tie, William Smith is now 5-2-2 overall with a 1-0-1 mark in Liberty League play.
  • The Thoroughbreds are now 6-0-2 overall with a 1-0-1 mark in conference play.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Herons dominated the box score, finishing with a 13-1 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 mark in shots on goal.
  • William Smith had all seven of the game's corner kicks.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • The Herons pressured Skidmore right from the opening whistle, piling up nine shots in the first half.
  • Sophomore Kaleigh Darby had the game's first chance in the fifth minute, but her shot was turned aside by Rogers.
  • Three minutes later, senior Ava Ruppersberger fired a shot off the crossbar and Marissa Mastracco's rebound attempt went just over the bar.
  • In the 29th minute, Moira van der Putt's shot at the right corner was stopped by Rogers.
  • Senior Marjorie Plants nearly scored late in the frame, but her shot was punched aside at the last second by the Skidmore goalie.
  • William Smith continued to apply pressure in the second half. In the 47th minute, first-year Nell Dwyer's shot just missed the crossbar.
  • Plants just missed the left goalpost in the closing minutes.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 2, when it takes on Ithaca. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
