GENESEO, N.Y.— The nationally-ranked William Smith College field hockey team fell 4-2 to SUNY Geneseo this evening in a nonconference battle at College Stadium. The Herons fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Knights remain undefeated and move to 3-0.
Senior Hannah Huston and junior Abby Jones led the Herons with two points each, scoring the goals for William Smith. First-years Caroline Kogut and Mia Batchelder were credited with assists on the Heron goals. First-year Baker Jeremiah played all 60 minutes in goal for William Smith, tallying a career-high eight saves. She is now 1-1 on the season.
The Knights outshot the Herons 20-4 in the contest and enjoyed a 12-2 edge in shots on target. William Smith and Geneseo each earned three penalty corners in the game.
Lily Spitz played all 60 minutes in goal for the Knights and didn't register a save in the win.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- Geneseo opened the scoring 8:26 into contest after the Knights got out to a fast break countering the Heron defense. Ella Greico dished off a pass around a rushing Jeremiah which found the stick of Katrina Clare, who fired a shot into the cage giving Geneseo a 1-0 lead.
- The Knights doubled their lead with 1:12 remaining in the opening quarter after being awarded a penalty corner. Olivia Hernick sent the ball to Shannon Cunningham who fired a shot past Jeremiah from the top of the arc.
- Geneseo continued to apply pressure for the remainder of the first half but was matched by a strong showing in goal by Jeremiah who made four saves in the second quarter, keeping the Herons in the game.
- The Knights opened the scoring three minutes into the second half after a scramble in front of goal. Ava Harman fired off a shot that Jeremiah originally saved. The rebound fell to the stick of Harman again and she slotted the ball past the goalie to make it 3-0.
- 1:23 into the final quarter, the Herons gained some momentum offensively earning back-to-back penalty corners. On the second corner, junior Delaney Williams inserted the ball to Kogut. Kogut dished off a pass to Huston who fired a shot to the back post past the Knight goalie, getting the Herons on the board.
- Three minutes later William Smith would strike again to get within one. First-year Mia Batchelder stole the ball from a Knight defender and passed the ball to a cutting Jones. Jones slotted a shot near post for her first career goal as a Heron.
- Geneseo responded two minutes later capitalizing off a penalty corner to give the Knights a two-goal cushion again. After a scramble in front of the net, Sara O'Donnell poked the ball past Jeremiah. Hailey Roethel was credited with the assist to close out the scoring on the night.
COACHES CORNER:
"Geneseo played a tough game and applied a lot of pressure which we adjusted better to in the second half," said Head Coach Sophie Riskie. "We capitalized on a few opportunities we had in the attack circle in the fourth quarter. We look forward to getting back out on McCooey to prepare for Ursinus on Saturday."
UP NEXT:
William Smith will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 7, for its home opener against Ursinus College. Action between the Herons and the Bears is set for noon on McCooey Field.
