#20 William Smith, Denison battle to 1-1 draw

PITTSBURGH, Pa.—The William Smith soccer team, which is ranked 20th in the United Soccer Coaches poll and Denison battled to a 1-1 draw in a non-conference game on Day 2 of the 2024 Double Tree by Hilton – Suites Pittsburgh Downtown Tartan Cup. The Herons are now 1-2-1 on the season and the Big Red are 2-1-1 overall.
 
Ava Brazie scored the William Smith goal. Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons and made one save.
 
Lola Tirabassi scored for Denison. Molly Noga started in goal and made four saves.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • Brazie opened the scoring in the 21st minute, She headed home a free kick for her first collegiate goal. Junior Ruth Hotaling was awarded the assist on the goal.
  • Senior Marjorie Plants nearly gave William Smith a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute, but her shot was turned aside by Noga.
  • In the 40th minute, junior Julia Accioly just missed the right goalpost with a shot.
  • First-year Lily Pryzwansky had a chance from inside the 18-yard box turned aside by Noga.
  • With six seconds left in the half, Tirabassi headed home a cross from Megan Mulvey for her first goal of the season.
  • In the 71st minute, Kendall Sierens had a shot smothered by Kirsten Nelson.
  • Late in the game, Lindsay Ringbloom nearly scored the game-winning goal, but her shot was stopped by Noga.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • William Smith finished the game with a 9-5 advantage in shots, including a 6-1 edge in the first half.
  • The Herons also had five corner kicks to Denison's three.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action next Saturday, Sept. 14, when it welcomes Messiah to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
