Hobart climbs out of early hole to top Ithaca 87-80

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team erased an 11-point deficit on the way to an 87-80 Liberty League win over Ithaca in Bristol Gym this afternoon. The Statesmen shot 55.9% from the floor while posting their highest scoring total of the season.
 
Hobart put four players in double figures led by Pat Healy's 22 points. He was 7-of-13 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Senior Carter Meshanic added a season-high 19 points and a game-high eight rebounds. First-year Monty Nedd came off the bench to score 13 points in just 11 minutes. Sophomore Alex Moesch chipped in 12 points and five boards while senior Aidan Rodgers finished with seven points and a game-high six assists and sophomore Dorian Paki blocked three shots.
 
Ithaca's Logan Wendell led all scorers with 29 points. Evan Cabral and Aidan Holmes contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively.

  • Hobart extended its winning streak to five games to improve to 10-3 overall, 4-2 in the Liberty League.
  • Ithaca falls to 6-5 overall, 3-1 in conference play.

  • The Statesmen won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Bombers 33-27.
  • Hobart shot 53.3% from the floor in the first half and turned it up a notch in the second half, connecting on a 58.6% clip.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bombers missed their first shot of the game, but then drilled three straight 3-pointers to build a 9-2 advantage.
  • A 3-pointer by Rodgers four minutes into the game brought the Statesmen to within one, but Ithaca answered with 10 straight points to stretch its lead to 19-8.
  • Hobart shook off its early struggles with an 11-4 run that included nine points from Nedd and trimmed the Bombers edge to just four.
  • Ithaca used a 7-point burst to restore its 11-point advantage, but Hobart scored 13 straight points. Meshanic contributed eight points during the surge, capping the run with a layup that gave the home team its first lead, 32-30.
  • Meshanic also scored the final points of the half, a layup that gave Hobart a 39-37 lead.
  • Cabral scored the first points of the second half, tying the game.
  • Over the next six minutes, Hobart doubled Ithaca's scoring rate 18-9 with Healy taking charge and scoring 10 points.
  • In the final 14 minutes of the game, the Statesmen kept the Bombers at arm's length, maintaining at least a two-possession lead down the stretch.

  • Today marks Hobart's biggest comeback since Dec. 1, 2023, when the Statesmen trailed Union by 11, but rallied to win 81-66.

  • Hobart will travel to Bard (7-6, 2-4) for its next game. The Statesmen will battle the Raptors at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17.
