Hacker’s late tally lifts Herons to weekend sweep

HENNIKER, N.H.—First-year forward Bella Hacker scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds remaining in regulation as the William Smith hockey team defeated New England College 3-2 in a New England Hockey Conference game at the Lee Clement Arena this afternoon. The goal lifted the Herons to a weekend sweep of the Pilgrims.
 
Senior Lauren Legler factored into all three goals as she finished the game with a goal and two assists. Senior Kayla Ketchabaw added two assists.  Sophomore Mia Iwicki started in goal. She made 12 saves.
 
Kate Devlin and Olivia Lindberg scored for New England College. Kayden Lallier-Whissell played all 60 minutes in goal and made 48 saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With their fourth straight win, the Herons improve to 7-8-1 overall this season with a 7-3-0 mark in NEHC play.
  • NEC falls to 1-15-0 on the season and 0-10-0 in conference play.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • William Smith finished the game with a 49-14 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Herons were 1-for-2 on the power play and the Pilgrims were 0-for-2 with the extra attacker.
  • In addition to Lallier-Whissell's 48 saves, The Pilgrims blocked 26 shots.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Senior Brianna Felice opened the scoring at the 2:57 mark of the first period. She wristed a shot from the right faceoff circle past Lallier-Whissell for her third goal of the season. Legler and Ketchabaw assisted in the goal.
  • After a scoreless second period, Legler gave the Herons a 2-0 lead just over four minutes into the third period. She picked up a loose puck on the doorstep and stuffed home the rebound for her fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Tara Valas picked up an assist on the goal.
  • The Pilgrims tied the game with a pair of goals 48 seconds apart. Kate Devlin broke up the shutout bid with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation. She poked a loose puck past Iwicki. Mae Lafferty had an assist on the goal.
  • Olivia Lindberg tied the game with her third goal of the season. She forced a turnover at the blue line and snapped a shot across the goal line.
  • Hacker scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds remaining in regulation. She one-timed a pass from Ketchabaw past the NEC goalie.  It was her third goal of the season. Legler also had an assist on the game-winning goal.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will wrap up non-conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 21, when it heads to Clinton, New York, to take on Hamilton. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
