Saints slip past Herons in Liberty League matchup

GENEVA, N.Y.— The Lobozzo sisters scored double-digit points to lead the William Smith basketball team as it dropped a conference matchup against St. Lawrence 64-46 this evening in Bristol Gymnasium.

Sophomore's Giana Lobozzo and Ava Lobozzo led the Herons in the Liberty League matchup with the Saints. Giana Lobozzo dropped 11 points and added six rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Ava Lobozzo chipped in 10 points, four rebounds, two steals and an assist in the loss. Senior Molly Walsh tallied nine points and two rebounds, while sophomore Amelia McCulley added seven points, four rebounds, two assists and a block for William Smith.

St. Lawrence had two players reach double-digits as well and were led by Caelan McHarney with 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Elizabeth Flynn chipped in 12 points, a game-high 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Saints.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The opening quarter saw the two sides trade the early momentum, finding crucial points in the paint. Giana Lobozzo led the Herons with six points as William Smith shot 50% from the floor to open the game. St. Lawrence shot 47% from the floor but found nine early points from McHarney to take a 20-15 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • The game settled down in the second quarter as both teams' defenses stepped up big. The Saints held an 11-7 edge in scoring in the second but only shot 21% from the floor. The Herons shot 25% from the floor but couldn't capitalize on St. Lawrence's turnovers. The Saint's maintained a nine-point lead heading into halftime.
  • William Smith came out with a 6-0 scoring run to open the second half and found early points from Sulmasy, Walsh and Ava Lobozzo to cut its deficit to three. St. Lawrence responded with a 5-0 scoring run of their own to take back the momentum. The Saints continued on their momentum and extended their lead to 13 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • The Herons tried to claw back into the game in the final quarter and found crucial boards from junior Faith Okoli and Martin, but William Smith was matched with an efficient St. Lawrence offense that shot 44% from the floor in the final 10 minutes. The Saints found 12 points in the paint and used the clock to close out the conference matchup on top 64-46.

  • William Smith falls to 2-14 overall and 2-7 in the Liberty League play with the loss.
  • With the road win, St. Lawrence moves to 10-5 on the season with a 5-4 mark in conference play.

William Smith will be back in action tomorrow as it takes on Clarkson to conclude alumnae weekend. Liberty League action between the Herons and the Golden Knights is set for 2 p.m. in Bristol Gymnasium.
