#1 Hobart downs Norwich 4-1 to complete weekend sweep

Statesmen win 31st straight

GENEVA, N.Y.—The top-ranked Hobart hockey team knocked off Norwich 4-1 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this afternoon to complete the weekend sweep of the Cadets. With the win, the Statesmen are now 17-0-0 overall this season with a 12-0-0 mark in NEHC play.
 
Senior Luke Aquaro led the way for Hobart with three points on a goal and two assists.  Junior Tanner Daniels added two assists in the victory. Junior Mavrick Goyer started in goal and made 22 saves in the win.
 
Matt Harvey scored for Norwich (8-6-3, 7-3-2). Sami Molu played all 60 minutes in goal and made 36 saves.
 
STREAKING
  • With today's win, Hobart extended its unbeaten streak to 42 games (41-0-1). Only the University of Wisconsin women have a longer unbeaten streak.
  • The win was the 31st in a row.
  • Hobart has won 45 straight games at The Cooler. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Statesmen finished the game with a 40-23 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen were 1-for-4 on the power play and the Cadets did not get a man advantage.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • First-year Connor Elliot opened the scoring at the 11:07 mark of the first period. He fired a one-timer from the right faceoff circle over Molu's glove for his second goal of the season. Aquaro and Daniels had assists on the goal.
  • Norwich tied the game just over a minute later. Matt Harvey snapped a shot from the right point past Goyer for his third goal of the season. Hayden Heinrich had an assist on the goal.
  • Aquaro gave Hobart a 2-1 lead 49 seconds into the second period. He picked up a bouncing puck in the slot and slipped a shot between the goalie's legs. It was his eighth goal of the season. Daniels and senior Cooper Swift were awarded assists on the goal.
  • Two minutes later Easton Ryan gave the Statesmen a two-goal lead with his third goal of the season. He broke down the left wing, cut to the slot and slipped a shot past Molu. The goal was assisted by junior Tristan Fasig and Elliot.
  • Graduate student Austin Mourar added a power-play goal in the third period. His sixth goal of the season was assisted by senior Shane Shell and Aquaro.
 
CLIMBING THE LADDER
  • With an assist in today's game, Aquaro now has 120 career points. He jumped Bill Tryder '92 for sixth on Hobart's career list. He is four points behind Scott Liming '83.
  • Aquaro now has 63 goals, one behind Phil McCarthy '91 who is fourth on the career list.
  • Tonight's two assists moved Aquaro into a tie for 14th  with Jonah Alexander '24 with 57. Shell is one behind them with 56.

Hobart will be back in action next weekend, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, when they head to New Haven, Connecticut, to take on NEHC newcomer Albertus Magnus for a weekend series.
