BOSTON, Mass.—The ninth-ranked Hobart volleyball team traveled to Boston this weekend and saw its eight-match win streak come to a close as the Statesmen split action on day one of the 2025 Fenway Classic. Hobart defeated Baruch 3-0 before falling to tenth-ranked Wentworth 3-0 in their home gym. The Statesmen now sit at 8-1 on the season, while the Bearcats fall to 0-1 and the Leopards move to 4-1 overall.
Graduate student Andrew Kim led Hobart with 27 kills, hitting .411 through two matches. He tallied 18 kills (.643) and seven digs in the sweep of Baruch before adding nine kills (.179) and three digs against No. 10 Wentworth. Kim added 10 digs, two blocks, two service aces and two assists in the split. This afternoon, Kim averaged 4.50 kills per set, 1.67 digs per set and 5.00 points per set to lead the Statesmen.
Sophomore Daniel Sappia also impressed for Hobart with 11 kills (.242), eight digs, and one block through the two matches. Classmate Noah DeLong chipped in 10 kills (.250), seven digs and a service ace, while first-year Josh Reilly tallied eight kills (.375), three digs, two service aces and a block for the Statesmen.
MATCH MOMENTS:
Match 1 (Baruch):
- The first set was back-and-forth between the Statesmen and the Bearcats as the two sides traded the lead twice and tied the score six times. Hobart combined for a match-high 17 kills (.640) compared to Baruch's match-high 13 (.379). Kim led the Statesmen with nine kills (.900) to grab the early lead with a 25-20 win in set one.
- Hobart continued on its momentum into the second set and combined for 15 kills (.333) as a team. Baruch tallied 11 kills (.125) but racked up seven hitting errors to hand the Statesmen a 25-19 win in set two to extend their lead to 2-0.
- The Statesmen closed out the sweep with another impressive performance, combining for 13 kills (.393) as a team. They held the Bearcats to a match-low eight kills (.094) and added two service aces to close out the opening match of the day with a dominating 25-15 win in set three.
Match stats:
- Kim led the Statesmen with 18 kills on zero errors, hitting an impressive .643 in the sweep. He was followed by Reilly with seven kills (.500) out of the middle and DeLong with six kills (.188) in the win.
- Sophomore Zack Farren and graduate student Benjamin Lincoln led Hobart from the setter position and tallied 18 assists each in the win. The duo combined for eight digs and one service ace as well on the afternoon.
- The Statesmen combined for 37 digs as a team and were led by sophomore libero Gavin Meador with 10. Farren chipped in eight digs in the win, while Kim added seven as well.
- Hobart held a 5-2 advantage in service aces against Baruch and were led by Reilly with two. Kim, Farren and DeLong chipped in one each in the sweep.
Match 2 (Wentworth):
- Wentworth shot out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set and never looked back as the Leopards combined for 16 kills (.467) compared to the Statesmen's 11 (.292). Jacob Waga put down five kills (.714) to lead Wentworth to a 25-18 win in set one of the top-10 showdown.
- The Leopards continued to roll in set two as they combined for a match-high 17 kills (.364) as a team and held the Statesmen to a match-low six kills (.111). Again, Waga led Wentworth with five kills as the Leopards cruised to a 25-17 win in set two.
- Hobart fought back in the third and forced a back-and-forth battle with Wentworth that saw five tie scores and two lead changes in the third set. Despite the early back-and-forth action, Wentworth used its block to earn crucial points and take the lead down the stretch. The Leopards closed out the nonconference battle with a 25-22 win in set three.
Match stats:
- Kim led Hobart for the second time of the day with nine kills (.179) against the Leopards. Sappia chipped in six kills (.136), while DeLong (.333) and first-year Alain Malcolm (.300) added four kills each for the Statesmen.
- Farren and Lincoln once again led from the setter position and tallied 12 and seven assists each, respectively. The duo combined for 11 digs and one kill in the loss.
- Hobart combined for 33 digs as a team and were once again led by Meador with 10. Lincoln chipped in eight digs, while DeLong added five through three sets.

Hobart will be back in action tomorrow as it takes on Emmanuel and Endicott in day two of the 2025 Fenway Classic. Action between the Statesmen and the Saints is set for 11 a.m., and will be followed by a battle with the Gulls at 1 p.m.
