#1 Statesmen shut out Valiants 3-0, extend win streak

RYE, N.Y.—The top-ranked Hobart hockey team scored a goal in each period as it knocked off Manhattanville 3-0 in a non-conference contest at the Playland Ice Casino this evening. With the victory, the Statesmen are now 11-0-0 to start the season.
 
Graduate Student Austin Mourar led Hobart with a goal and an assist. Junior Kahlil Fontana and sophomore Chris Duclair also scored in the win. Junior Damon Beaver started in goal and made 22 saves as he earned his second shutout of the season.
 
Sebastian Woods played all 60 minutes in goal for Manhattanville (3-7-1). He made 33 saves.
 
STREAKING
  • With today's win, Hobart extended its unbeaten streak to 36 contests (35-0-1). That is the fourth-longest streak in NCAA Division III History.
  • The Statesmen have won 25 straight games. That mark is also the fourth-longest streak in NCAA Division III.
 
KEY STATS
  • Hobart finished the game with a 36-22 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen were 1-for-3 on the power play and Manhattanville was 0-for-4 with the extra attacker.
  • The Valiants blocked 24 shots in addition to Woods' 33 saves
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Duclair opened the scoring at the 15:04 mark of the opening period. He jumped on a rebound in the right faceoff circle and flipped a shot past Woods for his seventh goal of the season. It was assisted by first-year Tamas Toth and Mourar.
  • Mourar doubled Hobart's lead 50 seconds into the second period. He blasted a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle through traffic into the back of the net. The power-play goal was assisted by seniors Luke Aquaro and Shane Shell. It was Mourar's second goal of the year.
  • Fontana added an insurance goal at the 10:35 mark of the third period. He collected a pass from junior Ignat Belov in the slot and chipped a shot past Woods. It was Fontana's fifth goal of the season.
 
CLIMBING THE LADDER
  • With today's shutout, Beaver now has 16 for his career. He is seventh on the NCAA Division III list, two behind Geneseo's Devin McDonald.
  • Hobart's five shutouts this season are tied for fourth on the team's single-season list.
 
UP NEXT
The Statesmen will be back in action next weekend, Jan. 10-11, when they head to Saratoga Springs, New York, to take on Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds are currently in a three-way tie for second in the New England Hockey Conference standings.
