#22 William Smith downs Union 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 22nd-ranked William Smith soccer team scored a goal in each half as it knocked off Union 2-1 in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field. With the victory, the Herons clinched a first-round bye in the Liberty League tournament.
 
Senior Julia Accioly and junior Miranda DeMura scored the goals for William Smith. Junior Antonia Goerke played all 90 minutes in goal and made seven saves.
 
Anabelle Thomas scored the goal for the Garnet Chargers. Rachel Berliner played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With their seventh straight win, William Smith is now 11-2-2 overall with a 7-1-0 mark in Liberty League play. The Herons can finish no lower than second in the conference standings and have earned a bye to the semifinals.
  • Union falls to 8-6-3 overall with a 3-3-2 mark in conference play. The Garnet Chargers enter the final week of the regular season in sixth in the conference standings with 11 points.

  • Both teams finished the game with 16 shots and eight shots on goal.
  • William Smith had 13 corner kicks and Union had one.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • William Smith opened the scoring on their third shot of the game. Accioly picked up her own rebound in the 18-yard box and chipped a shot past Berliner. It was her sixth goal of the season.
  • The Herons nearly made it 2-0 in the 16th minute, but sophomore Lily Pryzwansky's shot was stopped by Berliner.
  • Union tied the game in the 21st minute. Thomas collected a pass from Alayna Boileau and bent a shot into the upper right corner of the cage. It was her seventh goal of the year.
  • Following the goal, the Garnet Chargers continued to pressure the Heron defense. Boileau had a pair of shots smothered by Goerke.
  • The Herons had a flurry of chances to close out the first half but could not convert.
  • William Smith came out of the halftime break and immediately put pressure on the Union defense, earning three consecutive corners.
  • On the third corner, Emily Blight had a shot turned aside by Berliner and sophomore Grace Metzler had a shot blocked by a defender.
  • In the ensuing scramble in the 18-yard box, the ball fell on DeMura's foot, and she ripped a shot past the Union goalie. It was her first collegiate goal.
  • In the 67th minute, Goerke had to make a diving save on a shot from Boileau.
  • Vanessa Jorgensen fired a shot off the crossbar in the 86th minute and Julia Bancheri was robbed from a diving stop from Goerke in the closing seconds of the game.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 1, when it takes on RPI in Troy. The Herons can clinch at least a share of the regular-season title with a win.
