ELMIRA, N.Y.—The top-ranked Hobart hockey team scored twice in the third period as it knocked off Elmira 3-1 in its season-opener at the Murray Athletic Center this evening. With tonight's victory, the Statesmen extend their winning streak to seven games.
Three different Statesmen scored in the victory. Senior
Damon Beaver played all 60 minutes in goal and made 13 saves.
Stephen McDonald scored for the Soaring Eagles. Brody Haynes played just over 59 minutes in goal for Elmira. He made 35 saves.
KEY STATS
- Hobart finished the game with a 38-14 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Statesmen finished the game 2-for-4 on the power play. Elmira didn't convert on either of its two power plays.
GAME SUMMARY
- Hobart controlled the opening frame, finishing with a 15-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Statesmen, however, could not sneak a shot past the Elmira goalie in the first 20 minutes.
- Just past the midway point of the first period, sophomore Tamas Toth cut to the low slot and wristed a shot on cage that was gloved by Haynes.
- A minute later, Easton Ryan fired a shot off the goal post.
- The Statesmen got on the board at the 8:59 mark of the second period. Junior Bauer Morrissey fired a shot from the point through traffic over Haynes' glove hand. The power-play goal was assisted by fellow junior Conor Lally.
- Hobart again dominated the middle stanza, outshooting Elmira 13-4, but the Statesmen only led 1-0 after 40 minutes.
- Sophomore Calum Chau gave Hobart a 2-0 lead just over four minutes into the third period with a power-play goal. His shot hit the right post and redirected into the goal. Senior Kahlil Fontana was credited with an assist on the tally.
- First-year Laurent Trepanier put the game out of reach at the 18:02 mark of the third period. His first collegiate goal was assisted by fellow first-year Adam Ondris.
- Elmira broke up the shutout bid 21 seconds later. Owen Halloran broke up a pass in the neutral zone and passed the puck to McDonald. McDonald broke into the offensive zone, split the Hobart defense and slipped a shot past Beaver.

Hobart and Elmira will be back in action tomorrow, Nov. 1, when they head to the opposite end of Seneca Lake to wrap up the season series at The Cooler. The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
