Phillips’ brace lifts #22 Hobart past Ithaca 3-2

ITHACA, N.Y.—Hobart senior midfielder Quinn Phillips factored into all three goals as the 22nd-ranked Statesmen defeated Ithaca 3-2 in a Liberty League contest on Carp Wood Field this afternoon. Phillips matched his career high, recording five points on two goals and an assist in the victory.
 
Sophomore Danny Spataro scored Hobart's other goal. Senior Tommy Chyzowych started in goal and made three saves.
 
Jared Krasnove and Ikey Borden scored for the Bombers. Bryson Shaull played all 90 minutes in goal for Ithaca. He made five saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • With their third straight win, the Statesmen are now 9-0-2 overall this season, including a 4-0-1 mark in Liberty League play.
  • Hobart extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to 11 games. It is their best start to a year since going 11-0-0 to start the 2008 season.
  • Ithaca falls to 6-3-2 overall with a 0-2-1 mark in conference play.
 
KEY STATS
  • The Statesmen finished the game with an 18-11 advantage in shots, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.
  • Hobart had eight corner kicks and the Bombers had six.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • Ithaca opened the scoring 87 seconds into the game. Krasnove headed home a crossing pass from Jack Longo for his first goal of the season.
  • The Statesmen tied the game in the 16th minute. Phillips buried a penalty kick attempt in the lower left corner of the cage.
  • Four minutes later, Phillips dribbled around a defender and blasted a left-footed shot from 25 yards out that curled inside the right goal post. It was his fourth goal of the season.
  • In the 33rd minute, Phillips nearly added a third goal, but his shot was stopped by Shaull.   
  • In the 45th minute, Kloden Rapp had a shot smothered by Chyzowych.
  • Ithaca drew level on its third shot of the second half. Borden poked a bouncing ball across the goal line for his first goal of the season.
  • Spataro scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 68th minute. He collected a through ball from Phillips and chipped a shot over Schaull. Spataro's second goal of the season was also assisted by sophomore Brady Leitner.
  • Cameron Wooten had Ithaca's best chance in the closing stages of the game, but his shot was stopped by a diving Chyzowych.
 
AGAINST THE BOMBERS
  • Phillips has been a thorn in Ithaca's side during his career. This was his second straight five-point game against the Bombers. In Hobart's last two games, he has factored into six of the Statesmen's seven goals (4g, 2a).
  • In five career games against Ithaca, Phillips has 13 points on five goals and three assists.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
Hobart will enjoy the comforts of home to close out the regular season. The Statesmen will play four of their final five games on Cozzens Field. Hobart begins that stretch on Saturday, Oct. 11, when it hosts Skidmore at 2 p.m.
