Statesmen clinch Liberty League regular season title with win over RPI

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart soccer team got six goals from six different players on the final day of the regular season, clinching the top seed in the Liberty League Tournament with a 6-2 victory over Rensselaer. Senior Quinn Phillips led the Statesmen with a goal and two assists.

The Statesmen are 11-0-5 overall and sit alone atop the table in the Liberty League with a 6-0-3 record. It's Hobart's best record entering the postseason since 2008, when Hobart was 16-0-2 heading into the Liberty League Tournament.

Hobart came into the match with a clear path to the regular season title, just win. There were other scenarios that also led the Statesmen to the top spot, but they could also have finished as low as third in the standings, missing out on a first-round bye.

In the 20th minute, fans had to consider those other scenarios as Thomas Corcoran gave the visitors the early lead. Coming off of consecutive scoreless draws, the Statesmen scoring drought stretched more than 226 minutes before sophomore Brady Leitner evened the match in the 30th minute. Sophomore Daniel Spataro slotted a pass from the penalty spot to Leitner on his left, who hooked a one-timer into net for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Less than three minutes later, Hobart took the lead for good less than three minutes later when Phillips played a corner kick to the near post and junior Noah Fischer tucked it just inside the near post for his first collegiate goal.

Seventy-one seconds after that, Steven Pickering netted his first goal of the season, assisted by Griffin Coutts. First-year Gabe Smith scored to make it 4-1 in the 39th minute.

Hobart stretched its advantage to 6-1 on second half goals by Tommy Broderick and Phillips. The former registered his first collegiate goal, while the latter notched his fifth of the season, tied for second on the team.

Corcoran logged his second goal in the 81st minute to complete the day's scoring.

Hobart senior goalie Tommy Chyzowych made four saves on five shots in 72 minutes of work to earn the win.

The Statesmen will host a Liberty League semifinal on Friday, Nov. 7. Hobart will face the winner of the Tuesday first round match between No. 5 Clarkson (7-5-4) at No. 4 Union (7-5-5).

RPI ends its season with a 4-8-5 record, 1-5-3 in league play.
