Statesmen ground Cardinals 93-58

PITTSFORD, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team picked up its first win of the season in convincing fashion, defeating St. John Fisher 93-58 tonight. Four Statesmen hit double figures led by sophomore Monty Nedd's game-high 19 points.
 
Nedd was 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and 7-of-9 at the free throw line. He also grabbed a game-high six rebounds and dished out a game-high three assists. Junior Alex Moesch added 17 points, grabbed five boards and made a game-high four steals. Classmate Dorian Paki shot 6-of-9 from the floor on the way to 14 points and also made four steals. Senior Gabriel Bergeron contributed 10 points and six boards. Sophomore Allen Mordi chipped in six points, six boards and blocked two shots.
 
St. John Fisher's Jonathan McCaffrey and Maximus Michalski scored 10 points to pace the home team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams were tied at 4 two minutes into the game, when the Statesmen (1-1) launched a 26-9 run that broke the contest open.
  • Nedd, who kickstarted the run with a traditional 3-point play, led with six points during the surge. Moesch and Bergeron each contributed five points.
  • The Statesmen closed the run with seven straight points, including a triple by Bergeron.
  • Hobart heading into the break on a high note, scoring the final six points, including a dunk by Paki to give the Statesmen a 48-28 halftime lead.
 
AT THE HALF
  • Four players were in double figures at the break led by Nedd's 12 points. Bergeron, Moesch and Paki each had 10.
  • The Statesmen shot 59.4% from the floor and 77.8% at the line in the first half.
  • Hobart limited the Cardinals (1-2) to 35.7% shooting and 53.3% at the free throw line.
 
AFTER THE BREAK
  • The Statesmen led by at least 17 points throughout the second half.
  • Hobart put the game out of reach with 20 straight points during a four-minute span that started just past the midpoint of the half. The Statesmen were 7-of-7 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers during the sequence.
  • First-year Harrison Muntner scored seven points during the decisive run.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • 93: The 93 points are the most points scored by the Statesmen in their 54-game history with St. John Fisher.
  • 93: Marks the highest scoring output by the Statesmen since scoring 94 points in a win over Keuka on Nov. 29, 2022.
  • 35: The 35-point win is Hobart's most lopsided victory over the Cardinals.
  • 4: Hobart has won four in a row and seven of its last 10 minutes with St. John Fisher.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Statesmen will be back in action Tuesday, Nov. 18, when they make their shortest road trip of the season. Hobart will take on Keuka starting at 7 p.m.
