Fontana nets 4, #1 Statesmen race past Thoroughbreds 6-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart senior forward Kahlil Fontana matched a Hobart single-game record, scoring four goals as the top-ranked Statesmen defeated Skidmore 6-1 in a SUNYAC contest at The Cooler this evening. Tonight's game was the first SUNYAC game for both teams.
 
In addition to Fontana's four goals, junior defensemen Conor Lally and Bauer Morrissey finished the night with three assists each. Senior Mavrick Goyer went the distance in goal for the Statesmen. He made 17 saves as he earned the victory.
 
Theo Angelopoulos scored for the Thoroughbreds. Kyle Ozguri played all 60 minutes and made 42 saves in his first collegiate start.
 
STREAKING
  • With tonight's win, Hobart extended its home winning streak to an NCAA Division III record 56 games.
  • The Statesmen have won 11 straight games overall.

  • With the win, the Statesmen improve to 5-0-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in the SUNYAC.

  • Hobart finished tonight's game with a 48-18 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen were 2-for-4 on the power play and Skidmore was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Hobart opened the scoring at the 11:19 mark of the first period. Fontana picked up a rebound and flipped it past Ozguri for his fourth goal of the season. Morrissey and Lally notched assists on the tally.
  • Skidmore tied the game three minutes later. Tyler Fogu broke up a cross-ice pass in the neutral zone, raced down the left wing and dished a pass to Angelopoulos, who snapped a shot from the slot past Goyer for his first goal of the year.
  • The tie was short-lived. Forty-six seconds later, Virtanen scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal. He collected a loose puck in the low slot and wristed it past the Skidmore goalie. Heikki Virtanen's first collegiate goal was assisted by first-year Laurent Trepanier.
  • Fontana scored the game's next three goals to put the game out of reach. At the 15:22 mark of the second period, He one-timed home a feed from senior Tanner Daniels. Sophomore Nick Dimatos also had an assist on the goal.
  • Fontana's hat-trick goal came on the power play. He wristed a shot from a tight angle. His sixth goal of the year was assisted by sophomore Arvega Hovsepyan and Lally.
  • Eight minutes later, Fontana notched his fourth goal of the year and seventh of the season. The power-play goal was assisted by Lally and Morrissey.
  • Easton Ryan tacked on an insurance goal with less than three minutes remaining. Morrissey and Fasig tacked on assists on the goal.
 
WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT NIGHT
The Statesmen wore special camo jerseys during tonight's game. The jerseys will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project. Fans can also purchase Hobart merchandise to help support the WWP here.
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will conclude its three-game road trip on Saturday, Nov. 15, when it welcomes Plattsburgh to The Cooler. The SUNYAC contest is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
